Cancer Patients Increase 66 Percent
The number of cancer patients soared over 66 percent between 2000 and 2004, because of an increase in the elderly population and a more Westernized-diet, according to a report.

or the mass consumption of fermented food.

or the fact that they have become a rich nation not so long ago, having not had access to advanced medical equipment before they WERE rich, or the money to go to doctors, or ways to diagnose specific cancers...or even knowledge about certain cancers...

or the fact that oriental medicine is BS and now that they're using real medicine they're actually diagnosing things in terms of tangible medicinal problems and not imbalances of chi and unharmonious blood letting of the liver and meridians.

Korean Food Culture Must Change to Lower Cancer Rates
Korea's uncommonly high incidence of stomach cancer may have something to do with Koreans' particular food culture -- in which several people eat from the same bowl of stew or soup and partake from the same glass of alcohol -- is gaining persuasiveness. In fact, it has been revealed that 70 to 80 percent of Koreans were infected with the helicobacter bacteria, which was pointed out as a main cause of stomach cancer by the WHO in 1994.

On a good business day, the saliva of hundreds may be mixed in that dish of soy sauce. And consider yourself fortunate if the dish of soy sauce was used just for one day. If the shop had kept the soy sauce out there for a couple of days at a time, it would be just like sharing the diseases of thousands.

Fire-roasted meat or fish, salted fish, and smoked foods also have carcinogenic substances. In particular, there are reports of considerable connections between colon cancer and meats.

I think The China Study by Dr. T. Colin Campbell strongly supports the idea that [a more Westernized] diet is the culprit. Even if bacteria and viruses are involved in the development of some cancers, a diet high in animal products increases the likelihood that cancer cells will thrive and form tumors. Don't take my word for it -- read the book. It's an amazing work, and I really wish I could force everyone on the planet to read it.

A Korean teacher and I were just discussing this tonight. We know of several people with cancer. I wonder if Korea will go on a big anti-smoking campaign binge in about 5 years... similar to what happened in the 1980s in North America.

Where are you getting information that fermented food causes cancer? According to what I hear eg. soybean paste has anti-cancer effects.

http://www.sauce.or.kr/eng/sybnpst/story/story_menu05.php

Anti-cancer effect

Soybean paste exceeds most fermented foods in anti-cancer effects. This effect remains even after soybean paste is boiled. In a study, carcinogen was injected into mice, and part of the mice were given soybean sauce. The weight of cancer tissue decreased by about 80% in those mice that were given soybean paste.
Having soybean paste every day is one of the 15 rules recommended by the Korea Cancer Organization. The anti-cancer effects of soybean paste are being proven at home and abroad. It was also found that soybean paste restrains cancerous cells from growing

That is from the newspaper article.

I twitch a bit when confronted with the that soy sauce. I always pause a brief second. My wife yells at me.... ׾... (you wont die!)
