The college age guy behind the counter gave you lip? Do you honestly think he's the one calling the shots there? Go back some other time, find the owner, and complain to him about the way his albasaeng is treating his customers. If that fails, report them to the KNTO. |

Hmmm, a Korean who is sick of westerners in Itaewon...quick call CNN. He probably sees a hundred Joes or Bobs everyday. I am sure that he really doesn't want to bother the people paying for playing the computers. They are regular customers and you are no one. I agree with him...don't go if you don't like it. Some western people go there one hour a week to check email but the smokers could be there all day, everyday (PAYING). The owner will agree with the worker. |

The OP is right. If the PC bang isn't willing to enforce it's apparent no smoking policy, then they should pull down the no smoking signs. Are they there for decoration or what? |

Eff that! If some dumbass sits in the non smoking section of the PC bang and lights up, reach over and crush the cigarrette. People can only walk over you if you let them.
Had smokers light up to me several times....I would point out that this was the no smoking section....most would nod, smile, get up and move over to the smoking section. The few who didnt, I simply grabbed their smoke and dropped it in their coffee...once they realised that I was a proper barbarian and not intimidated by their arrogance they would leave....after calling me a few choice names...to which I would laugh and reply in kind.
You can only be walked upon if you lie down and let them. |

It's a very real problem in Itaewon. When I first came here five years ago Itaewon was like the wild west. Hell there wasn't even a Subway station here. Hooker hill was the place to be, a club where the Limelight is currently located did not allow the white devil in.
Believe it or not, Itaewon is moving much much more up scale. A vast majority of this is because of the foreign business owners moving in and providing service for the foreign community. Frankly, Koreans are unable to compete with the foreign business owners, be it restaurants, bars or hell even bookstores. I am not saying this to be an asshole, it's just the truth. A Korean would blow away any service I could offer a Korean in Korea Town in the States. There are certain expectations and banter when a customer is well being a customer. My wife, who many of you have met speaks English very very well. But there are times when dealing with certain people the conversation is just not smooth. The conversation is being understood by both parties involved, but there is a certain comfort level that is missing.
I went to the new Italian place neat the Rocky Mountain Tavern the other night which is owned by an Italian guy (might be American but he can speak Italian at least). The waitress sat us at our table then asked us if the table ok with us. I about shit myself. While its a very simple thing, this business is going to do very well with the foreign community and get some Korean customers as well because they are catering specifically to the needs and wants of the people the frequent the area.
There are several businesses in Itaewon that are obviously on their last leg. One is Itaewon Land sauna and the other is Manhattan Bar. Both of these business depend on foreign customers as a source of revenue due to their location but can give a flying *beep* about them.
At one time, Itaewon land would not allow foreigners in there. Then, they would only allow a foreigner in there with a Korean companion. Now they are nice enough to let us in without an escort. There is not one lick of English anywhere in the entire building (besides the pull sign on the door). The sauna itself, which is a dry sauna, has a sign in Korean that you can electorcute yourself if you put water on it, but not one in English. This is just one example of many with Itaewon Land.
Manhattan Bar does not allow Nigerian customers in. Any kind of market research will show that this kind of policy will not sit well with western customers. Secondly, have you seen their food menu (munchie food). Take a look at thier sidewalk sign next time you go by. Squid and mayonaise salad is not big with the foreign community. |

GIVES STANDING OVATION. I get sick of that crap too. I am not a smoker and I don't go to P.C. bangs if I can help it but if it says no smoking section then guess what you ain't lighting up next to me.

Wouldn't "managers" or "frontmen" be more accurate in nearly (<--qualifier) every one of these examples?
(BTW, were you going to PM me a photo of the stone material you wanted?) |

The thing is you either own the place or you would not be working there. It is hard to get a visa for the service industry (on my F-2 the only non-professional workplace I am not allowed to work at is a bar/night club) in Korea and if you have a marriage visa or Korean "blood line" visa, why would you work as a front man or manager when you can make so much more money someplace else?
As for the stone material, we might be going with something else and waiting for it to get a bit warmer out. Thanks for the offer though. |

There is a PC bang on the third floor of a building on the same side of the street as Starbucks and the police station in Itaewon, just outside of subway exit 3. This morning I entered that place - there weren't a lot of people there, but there were clearly visible "No Smoking" signs in English and Korean. More people were smoking there than in the places designated for smoking!
When I mentioned this to the college-age guy who was working there, he became a real jerk and told me he didn't want "*beep* foreigner" in there and told me to leave if I didn't like the smoking. He said he had nothing to do with it.
Why would anyone want to go into this place? |
Is that the one above Panchos? |

just remember, he's the front desk guy at a fucking PC bang, you're an english teacher.
i think you could hold your head high after this maltreatment, just knowing where you stand in the scale of general awesomeness.
2 years in and stuff like this just makes me laugh. make it clear to the guy that he works in a PC bang and you are a god. then take a an upper-decker dump in the tank of the toilet that he's going to have to clean later. |
