The job ad says the starting pay is 38,000 an hour, which is about double the usual rate. It also says you can work up to 160 hours a week during the months of June, July, August and December. A minimum of 96 hours a month guaranteed on low-season months. Curious to know if anyone had had any experience with this place? The earning possibility seems too good to be true, though of course the schedule would be insane. There has to be a catch...

Writing in a hurry here..forgot to mention they are looking for SAT and AP teachers. Still, though, I'm unconvinced about the salary. Thanks in advance for any info you might want to share... |

160 hours/wk at 38,000 would be quite lucrative. What about the other 8 hours? |

Yeah, I've never been able to work more than 110 hours/week on a long term basis. |

I believe the guy who runs the place used to work at Daewon Foreign Language High School. The place is nothing special: it is just part of the new breed of schools(programs at the FLHSs, Sanbo/Sambo, Seoul Eo-Hagwon, CDI to a lesser extent[as they suck arse]) taking advantage of Korean parents who have no idea what it takes to prepare for and get into a decent university in the States and who are therefore willing to pay an arm and a leg(and halmoni's arms and legs) to get little Minsu the "proper" help they need to get into the Ivy League.
Of course there is a huge cut made between mom and dad's tuition payment and what ends up in the teacher's pay bucket.
Right now, "elite" Koreans are SAT crazy. More than just being necessary for those kids preparing to study abroad, it is being used as yet another qualification kids can wear as a badge when the apply to SNU, Yonsei and Kodae. AP tests as well. Realizing this, Steven Academy has begun, without any real knowledge or experience, to branch out into the world of DIS(Department of International Studies) exam preparation, a field that is currently dominated by poor, rather ignorant teachers(the head guy is [supposedly, so I hear, maybe]a real jackass) and recent high school graduates at Saehan Academy. Arguably, this is smart: if students think they can get prepared for both American and Korean tests at the same place, Steven may just be opening up the market. Of course, they(the academy) need to know what they are doing, and I have heard that the teachers at the school aren't up to what the school promises and the school therefore relies on Steven's reputation quite heavily.
Bottom line, it may be a great place to make some contacts, but you will have to deal with fickle parents that have not a single clue what they are talking about, students who only want be told where to fill in the circle and an institution that would be taking the lion's share of the money you could be earning by teaching SAT, essay writing or debate/discussion privately. Teachers who arrange their own privates in these subjects make a minimum of 50,000 won an hour and sometimes well over 100,000.
So, in my opinion, it is a great place to get a foot into a rather lucrative market, but will be a major pain in the ass while you do so.
Also, if Steven is who I think he is, I have met him and he seemed like a nice guy. I have also heard good reports about him. So while he may be robbing you blind as a businessman running a business, I really don't think he will screw you over intentionally.
Cheers. |

Personaly, I would avoid Steven. He came across as a real a-hole when I met him last year. He demanded to sit in on my interview with the school owner, even after she asked him 3 times to wait outside. Then, after 5 minutes, he was pressuring the woman to make a decision right then and to not waste our time. He was not representing me at all, and treated both me and the owner of the school unprofessionaly. Of course I didn't get the job, nor did I ever return any of his phone calls. Maybe other people have had better experiences with him |

It might be true. There are several "elite" teachers that have left FLHSs to move into the Hakwon arena just to make a fat load of cash. They tend to have amazing power trips and are very, very full of themselves.
This description sounds par for the course. Ah, well. Another potential *beep* for the pile. |

That about sums up my experience with Steven. Though this post is old, personally, I'd still give this guy a miss. |

Seriously? Commenting on two separate posts about the same school from 3 years ago? Why don't you post your own review of the place instead of sneakily inserting your criticism into ancient threads?
Not that have a clue about Steven academy, I just don't like your approach. |

Sorry 'bout that. I'm new to this discussion forum and wasn't sure about posting etiquitte.
My review is that I've had an unprofessional relationship with this hagwon in the past and wanted to be sure people are forewarned. I just happened to do a search to see if I was alone in having a bad experience, and it turns out I was not. My intent wasn't to be sneaky, but just to express my opinion I wish I could have expressed 2 years ago if I was on this forum back then. At any rate, I'll be sure to make my posts more timely. |

Keep in mind that a lot of places who pay hourly (such as CDI) either don't provide housing or you have to pay the rent on housing they already have arranged. |
