Tory vows 'fairness' for religious schools
This is stupid. You can't fund everyone who wants to go to a school based on religion. It's just not feasible. Also, segregating all the different religions is going to hurt Canada in the long run. Finally, I most definitely think all funding should be put towards public school to make them better.
This part is the scariest though, I hope our country isn't going this way...

He said the party still has to work out details such as whether money would be given to the parents or directly to the religious schools, but indicated families who use non-religious private schools may not qualify for any proposed assistance.
"The scope of who it applies to has not been decided," said Tory. "But the issue itself that is clear, that has to be looked at where the fairness issue applies directly, is to faith-based schools." |

Why not? I'm no expert on Canadian politics, but according to the article Roman Catholic schools are supported by the State.
Why shouldn't others be too?
In my opinion though- Anyone who has the money to send their children to a private school, shouldn't expect anything from the State. |

Imagine, Muslims, Hindus, etc.. Not to mention opening it up to every denomination of Christianity. I think all the funding should be pulled by the provincial governments from the Catholic schools (or any others it supports) and create a fair system. |

Give each parent a voucher for each child... let them decide which school... free market approach
it seems like the Tories want to fund some private Protestant churches and exclude other faiths from their expanded funding plans. It'll sell in Alberta, their heartland, but not in the major urban centres.
sounds like a lack of fairness in trying to expand the system of supporting religious schools by only allowing some targeted religious groups |

Maybe not to private schools, but until very recently (around 2000, I think) all kids in Newfoundland went to a publicly funded school based on their religion. Students were required to take courses in religious ed each year. In the case of say a Jewish kid, they could go to a school near their house and just opt out of the religious studies course. |

Didn't read the article too well, I take it? It is not talking about the federal TORIES, it is talking about one person JOHN TORY the leader of ONTARIO'S Conservative party. Now explain how ALBERTA and the FEDERAL TORIES have anything to do with this?
That article is very clear that it is Ontario's convervatives that are talking about doing this. Nothing is said about Alberta or the Federal Tories. |
