Once I was falsely accused of stealing by a security person (this was in high school in the states). I get edgy when people follow me around here-people ask if they can help me, and I scurry away. Guess it's good for the pocketbook! I got fed-up w/it at Hyundai dept. store, though- I was in Beanpole, and the salespeople weren't following the other customers around. 2 ajossis were left completely alone, so I didn't know if she thought I was going to steal, or if she was trying to be extra, extra helpful to the foreigner. I mean, she was right on my back. I bemusedly asked her if she was following me, but she didn't get it. Then I tried, "Chesunhamneeda- hon ja iko shipoyo" (Sorry- I'd like to be alone, please), but I feel a little rude saying that.

Anyway, I understand they're just doing their job, and that's the shopping culture here, but man, I swear I start getting clausterphobic when shopping because I can't get any space. What do you guys do?

Walk from one thing to another and back again quickly. Repeat as often as necessary. They usually get it after the second time.

I just hand them my wallet and walk out.

Seriously? Depends on several things. If the clerk is female, sometimes I make a silly, flirty comment about why she might be following me around. That's if she's the cute & friendly-looking sort. It's easy to make them giggle, and you never know what might develop from such mundane beginnings. But with the more hard-nosed, humourless ones or the dudes, I'll be a bit more direct. "I'll let you know if I need your assistance" (while forcing a smile). I guess that's what I'd say in any country if it happened.

But apart from ways to get them to stop lurking behind me, I agree it's strange and uncomfortable. Are they expecting us not to understand what shirts and pants are all about? Do they think I'll need to have those staplers I'm looking at explained to me? And are they assuming that, while I don't know how a stapler works, my Korean is good enough to understand their explanation? They're like clueless shopkeepers who stand guard, so to speak, in the doorways of their shops, unable to figure out why everyone passes them by without stopping to look at their wares.

" Hi, you must be able to speak English. That's great."

If she does, tell her you are just looking and will call her over if you need help, have any questions, or will buy something.

If she doesn't, then she'll look a little confused and walk away.

First thing I do when I walk into a shop in Korea is say "eye shopping"............

they leave me alone. I don't like anyone picking out clothes for me (or anthing), especially a Korean adjumma.

My no nonsense approach keeps them away.

Man don't go to china.. Chinese salespersons will be on you like flies on shiet. They will physically tangle with you. I've been pushed, pulled and I've seen people get hit as well.

Hit?!! People hit the salespeople, or the salespeople hit the customer?? Wild... Speaking English to them doesn't work for me. They wildly look around for their co-worker to bail them out of incomprehension..

I don't know why I always forget to say to say "eye shopping", but that doesn't usually shake them off. I like the, "I'll let you know if I need anything..." I wish I didn't have to engage them at all, but that's the way it is. Man, I get so stressed out shopping here. Confused

That always reminds me of the movie Menace to Society, as well as its spoof Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking your Juice in the Hood.

"Hurry up and buy!"

"Five dollar! You don't like? You don't buy!"

"I feel sorry for your mother!"

It was the sales people hiting not the customers..

I was in heaven.. I loved the barganing. It was a blast, but some people just couldn't handle it.

I look bored and stare off in the distance, as if patiently waiting for my wife (which I normally am), pretending that their wares are just mild distractions.

The same way I did back home in pressure sales shops: I ignore them, if they persist I tell them I am just looking and if they keep on, I politely tell then that their behaviour is bordering on customer harrassement.

Rarely goes beyond stage 2 however.

I've found I like the fact that they follow me around. Makes me feel good when I don't buy a frickin' thing!!! Seriously it freaks me out and so I don't shop in department stores or anywhere else I feel a salesperson is gonna be on my a$$. I save alot of $$$ that way. I guess I owe the leaches Wink

Sorry to resurrect this old thread, but i'm going to Incheon Airport soon and i find the gift shop women to be terribly overbearing. I'm wondering if anyone has any other ideas on how to get them off my back as soon as i enter the gift shop. They're overstaffed too so i'll have to repeat my self to each staff member every 2 feet!
I speak basic korean.
For those people who also feel the same, and are easily angered by salespeople, how do you deal with them?
