Apparently you weren't joking. Wow, you really don't know how to abbreviate words properly?

Mod's is an abbreviation for moderator's.
Mods would be the abbreviation for moderators.

And, as Kermo pointed out, "you're" is certainly not an abbreviation.

Again, were you just jerking me around? I hope so.

Q.

I asked Oxford, and Oxford says it's okay!

We have received four cheques and two IOU's.
(But IOUs is common and accepted, and the usual plural of CD is CDs).

Most symbols for units such as lb (pounds) and cm (centimetres) do not strictly have plural forms.

Generally, the only time an apostrophe is needed for abbreviation is when ambiguity would arise. I did a quick internet search to verify that, and it seems the rules still haven't changed.

Examples:

B.A.'s
pdf's
SOS's

Any lower-case acronym would qualify as well.

But "mod's"? That's incorrect.

I didn't mean for this to turn into an elongated discussion about apostrophe usage, although it is interesting to me. I was just making a comment about it being superfluous, or as I originally said, "fruity".

Q.

The mods may be doing a good job; Meanwhile the abbreviation police are totally kicking ass.

Yeah, right. I guarantee as soon as you saw the title you rolled up your sleeves in anticipation of a good apostrophe use battle and thought "damn, it's gonna be a hot night in Shintanjin!"

Out with the truth! Razz

Sure it can be frustrating getting a post or even a whole thread deleted. I assure you we don't do it "out of boredom."
We wish we didn't have to do it at all Confused

Some people don't realize that often, in their absence from the boards, a particular thread they were participating in has completely gone to crap with flame wars for 2 pages and counting...some provoked by trolls who aim to derail threads, some just because of heated differences of opinion that get out of hand. We do our best to edit out the flame wars, but some threads are just not salvageable that way, ie: they wouldn't make much sense after editing out the bad stuff. Sometimes peoples' posts get caught up in the edit.

Users often don't see a lot of the really bad stuff because it gets removed pretty quickly. Usually it saves threads from being ruined by a huge flame war because we removed the "you polesmoking assmunch" type stuff so the discussion can continue normally----which had nothing to do with polesmoking assmunches.

It's nowhere near perfect but it keeps things more or less civil.

There should be term limits BTW Wink.

Plus he got 104% of the vote.

Seriously though I think problem is retaining them rather than kicking them out- it's a thankless job at the best of times.

And I'm glad you're not. "You're" is a contraction, not an abbreviation.

Looking at the examples that mitridates posted, it would appear that acronyms can take an apostrophe when pluralized. "Mods" is not an acronym, unless there are two magical words that everyone can see except for me. It's an abbreviated noun (whatever those are called in that fancy grammar book of doom).

-----

I'm so out of touch with the board that I don't even remember which threads I said what in half the time, so I'll comment about something and never get to see the response. I could understand if you wrote a 6 page disssertation on the meaning of life why you'd be upset about having the post/thread deleted, but if it's really that precious to you, save everything on a word file so you can go back and admire your astounding prose. Me, I'll continue writing drivel for 9 out of 10 posts, and if this thread gets deleted, the thought of pouring a shot of soju on the ground for my departed homies will only briefly cross my mind.

If "mod" is a noun, then of course the apostrophe should not be there for the plural and the OP is wrong.

On the other hand, if the OP meant "moderators", as I think he did, then the apostrophe is necessary, to stand for the missing letters.

The OP can settle it, if he gives a merde.

Examples, man. Examples. Now I'm curious, too. Show me examples of other abbreviated words (not acronyms or contractions) that take apostrophes.
