what's up people, i read this board on and off when I was in Korea, I'm a Korean-Canadian God who taught English in Korea for 3 and half years (EPIK where are you at!!!) and I just want to ramble about something maybe it will be interesting maybe it will be not interesting but because I'm God I will talk a little. well Korea was definitely fun and interesting, meeting people and girls there was very fun. KOrean people are more fun than Canadians, you can make friends with koreans very easily and go get drunk with them and often they will pay for it, even Korean chicks would pay if you don't know them very well, but if you get to know the korean chicks very well you will have to pay which turns out crappy in the end but so is life (if you are not me), but one thing about the Koreans which I didn't like and what peole in Canada usually don't do is that emotional business, Korean people are so very emotional with everything they do, everything is an excuse to get angry or super happy or start crying, you meet one korean for 5 minutes and you are their little brother forever, cross them once and that's over of course. it got to the point where i was scared and nervous about asking even shop owners questions about products they sell because they could have exploded with some emotional outburst (angry or otherwise). i remember in my town, i used to buy hair gel at this beauty shop because it was cheap there and the 30 ish woman who ran it would often explode into outbursts, say I would give her two thousand wons and she would nearly push the money away, and i mean violently almost slap the money away and scream for the exact 1500 change. i'm a little different i can speak korean so i always dealth with koreans using korean (not perfect korean mind you but usually there was no problem with the language, especially after a few years in) anyway these angry outbursts extremely disturbing. even with friends of friends you meet, this problem would arise, i remember once i met this older man who was a friend of my friend who as an older guy, we were talking normally and i forgot to add an honorific (that's hard to do if your first language is english) and this guy jsut flipped, you translate what he said it would be something like "you f-cking sh---head no f- manners"
I would get these kinds of outburts from people in stores (GYOBO BOOKSTORE GWANGHWAMOON you get called OUT suckers!!) and even at tourist information booths. now mind you, there were a ton of very nice and polite people in korea. I met and gotten very warm treatment from strangers and shopkeepers in Korea. but the existence of these latent bombs almost almost ruined my stay over there.
in canada it's very different, with the exception of under 25's and teenagers, almost everybody is calm and polite. you can ask anybody on the street for the time or directions and you will 9 times out of ten get a polite response.
another thing I miss about Korea are the women. is it just me or are the korean women hot hot hot? i wasn't in seoul but up in seoul it's like a hot women hot spot, screw wifi, seoul got the chicks. back in canada, for whatever reason, the women are not interesting me. sometimes i catch girls looking at me or trying to flirt, i swear i just take off, i don't know what it is. when that happened in korea, i would love it. maybe it's my preference? anyway, it's just my personal observation.
i'm ending this rambling now because i've been typing for too long. this entry is full of spelling mistakes and bad punctuation i know. please fix it for me |

If you go to Mexico, Portugal, parts of Spain or Italy you can experience the same thing (the emotional bomb). Had some European relatives who used to be like that all the time, so I guess I'm immunized against it. I am sorry to hear about it rattling you so, although I can totally understand. I've been lucky so far in Korea - I still manage to brush it off as their own therapy or venting and I just continue on unaffected. Usually not reacting to it or feeding it results in their self-conscious conciliatory tone and a general return to earth. I'd be interested to know if there are any noticeable trends where this experience is more/less common with different appearances, e.g. richer/poorer, younger/older, taller/shorter m/f etc. etc.
On a not totally unrelated tangent, I used to travel through American airports frequently (before 9/11) and I noticed after a while that I got better service when dressed in my best suit and terrible service when I was dressed comfortably although my demeanour was the same. After a while I learned to wear that damned suit like a uniform for consistently good travel service. |

I'm thinking there could be a connection between the hostility you got from a lot of people and how you refer to yourself as God. Just throwing it out there. |

It always amazes me when people report experiences that are diametrically opposite of mine. I have no explanation for it. |

Yes, Korean women are hot.
I've been in Canada now for a little over a year.
It's great for my marriage... my eyes never stray, whereas in Korea they always did.
There are a few slim and attractive women in Canada, but usually once they open their mouths it's game over, unless you find that nasely Valley Girl accent North American women have attracitve.
It's not all North American women mind you, there are some high quality exceptions, but the mass of them are just... not much better than your typically North American guy I guess.
North American culture has ruined the women here. |

Funny, I've always imagined the Almighty as being more in to punctuation...
Has anyone here heard the song, "God's Kid Brother" by the Dead Milkmen?
If you haven't, go give it a listen somehow and then re-read "The Ambivalent One"'s first post. It's worth a giggle. |

Better duck dude....I hear the rumble of the North American feminist apologists stampeding toward this post. No names. You'd better quickly post some derogatory things about Asian chicks in general as a disclaimer. |

This is something I've heard from friends of mine in the same circumstances as you. It's encouraging. |

It:s extremely untypical for a Korean to make an outburst because you dont put in an honorific. Its also extremely rare for shop workers to make an outburst. They might be a bit rude or give you poor service, but outburst, no. Frankly, I dont believe a word of your story. You come across as quite a knob though, so perhaps it was just you that was attracting this poor treatment. |

If you spoke in the same tone as your post, Im surprised it didnt go to punches thrown. But as the previous poster, I suspect you are simply a loser who is also a liar. |

OK, so for me, Koreans just seem boring and strange. They ask weird questions and say weird-yet-predictable things. I now know why they ask them, but anyway they are nothing like the op described.
Korean women are mostly cute once you get used to them (but they are an acquired taste to many) but they are really really annoying to talk to in almost any capacity beyond merely asking for the time.
Now, CHINA for me, on the other hand, is almost exactly the way the OP described Korea.. It was not easy to live in Shanghai and have a gf... not so much that the women are cuter (actually I think they're about the same overall) but they are much much more available and even pretty agressive about hitting on you .... Whereas you have to play the High School games with Korean women to get them go out or whatever, Chinese women COME UP TO YOU and hit on you...
Well, I know from talking to other people that not everyone sees it like this but this would be me. |
