Well this winter vacation I tried out projects. We spent about 3 weeks making our own island, covering geography and the descriptions of various areas, flags, shapes and various flags meanings, money, housing, animals etc. etc.

The response was better than I could have ever hoped for, the kids worked diligently (tho the baskin robbins voucher reward for the best project probably contributed to their enthusiasm) and the work they produced was awesome.

The other thing which made it so useful was that my best english students were able to go into much greater depth than the lower students, meaning noone ran of things to do or found the work too east or hard.

Now I want to replicate the success with my mainstream classes. The problem is, I teach 16 indivual classes each with 40 students making it a bit of a logistical nightmare. Also the larger classes make them harder to focus on their work. Anyone know of any ideas I can use in such a large setting? Or have any stories of similar things they've done in their classrooms? Even literature on the processes would help.

you could always divide the class into groups, and have each group design their own island.

i had a class two years ago which i divided into groups and told them to make up their own buisnesses. they came up with some pretty cool stuff. i've forgotten most of them, but there was one group that had sort of a water park where you swam in fruit juice rather than water.
my favorite one, however, was a restaurant where you watched c0ckfights at your table, and then the loser was cooked in front of you. brilliant!
