Man, i just dont understand, maybe they're all sons of super rich oil riggers and their daddy's simply bought the music industry for them as a christmass gift.

I never bothered to check, I just assumed they were what they said they were, average small town boys who learned how to play the music biz game, and play it well (sort of a Cdn male version of Madonna).

They have talent, they've worked hard, lots of people love their music.
But the music is cliche, and while they have talent they seem to lack imagination. I don't begrudge them their arena rock fans, or their album sales, or their money.
It only bugs me when the hype obscures other bands equally (if not more) deserving of critical and financial success (such as sweeping Juno nominations for no good reason other than selection committee must have been feeling lazy) or when they're held up as the standard that all up and coming Cdn bands should strive to attain.

And I think that's the kernel of what this thread is about, but only Alias can say for sure.

May have been covered previously but shouldnt you change this thread title to 'crappiest Canadian band ever'. In that case Nickelback would take the title hands down with simple plan coming in a distant second but still rating as 2nd crappiest band on earth

Hip all the way.

A few good songs, but I hate when you meet other Canadians in Korea and the conversation turns to Tim Horton's coffee and the Tragically Hip.

I have to agree. While I do believe that they are a good band I also tire of the nationalist sentiment that surrounds them. If you are Canadian you're supposed to like the Hip.

Here's why Nickelback suck so much.

They chose their name when one of the guys was working in a coffee shop. Someone paid a dollar for a 95 cent drink. He said "Here's your nickel back." Suddenly he had the worst idea of all time, and started a band.

Good Canadian bands/singers? Hmm.

Neil Young, The Band. The Guess Who had their moments, ...

Tragically Hip had their time too, but...

I don't know.

So just because Britany Spears and N'Sync were topping the charts at one point, does that mean they were doing a good job?

Record sales are not an indicator of how good a band is. You can thank the record company, not the band. It's in their best interest to narrow the variety of music that's popular, because then more profits will flow through them. When an independent band makes it onto the charts, that's money going to them that isn't going to the record companies.

the most overrated canadian band?
well, i'm more than willing to jump on the nickleback-bashing wagon...pretty much everything said here about them is perfectly valid: they are talented technical musicians, who left their imagination in that coffee shop till all those years ago....
the most underrated canadian band?
the lowest of the low, sam roberts (just givin' props to my peeps), metric, spirit of the west, blue rodeo, jazzberry ram, the dears, the smalls, etc. etc. etc.
the good thing about cancon regulations is that it spreads a little bit of butter to a lot of bands. the bad thing is that then the record companies and the dirty juno selection committee set their myopic sights on one or two bands, and give them all the gravy.
oh, and to whoever said i mother earth was our lady peace's bastard cousin: you made me shoot coffee out my nose with that one, you bastard!!

I was kicking myself in the ass after I went to SummerSonic in Osaka to see NIN and found out a week later Arcade Fire had done a set there, too. I'm not really into many new-ish bands nowadays, but they're one of the only ones to have grabbed my attention.

Oh yeah, and I think all the 'overrated' designation for the Hip is simply from the fact that so many Canadians just go on and on and on and on about them. Being overrated doesn't necessarily mean a band sucks. Hell, I've been to a few of their shows and definitely think they're great, but I could also see the overrated thing as sorta true, cuz SOME of us (especially, the...erm... overzealous overseas ones) can be excessively vocal about 'em.

Oh yeah, and it is physically impossible for Arcade Fire to be overrated.
