I just had a nice shirt made at Hamilton Shirts in Itaewon, but how about the other stores in the area?
One guy told me he goes to a different tailor every time since some tailors get lazy if they think they have your business. |

Yeah I'm having trouble with that. The tailor I usually go to completly stuffed up a dress I'm having made. After refusing to take my height measurements, my supposed floorlength ballgown was already two or three inches off the ground before it was hemmed
That's the second time he's buggered up my measurements and it's a shame because his dress maker is fab. But I have to deal with this clown to get to her.

I've been going to Hamilton Shirts for years, and have recommended them here. They keep your measurements on computer file, yet of course you can always remeasure.
I really don't understand your friend's comment why they would asterick your order and get lazy. If you like the shirt, why not go back for more? When I do, I ask for and get a discount, as they see I'm a return customer. [/quote] |

There may be a downside using the custom tailors in Itaewon. The price will be good. The material will be what you pay for. The service will be good (and fast!).
The downside.....They will make you a conservatively styled suit. Fine if you are 45+ and don't want anything fashionable. But, if you are younger and looking for a really sharp contemporary suit, the Itaewon tailors may have a problem with that. I know mine did.
He was a beautiful old gent with impeccable English. I spent the first 3 hours in his shop just chatting and drinking coffee. He had a fascinating verbal history of the changes undergone in Itaewon since he set up shop there in the 60's.
Onto the measuring. I tried to emphasise that I wanted a snug-fitting style jacket with a kind of hipster-style, tight fitting trouser. I'm a little short so loose fitting suits don't look so good on me. He acknowledged this and asked me to come back the next week for a first fitting. When I came back the pants were totally grandad style( a zipper about a foot long!!) and a really baggy jacket.
I immediately knew that I wasn't going to pay 450,000 for a suit I would hate so I set him straight. Politely but firmly. He got a little quiet but assured me things would be perfect when the finished thing arrived.
I got the suit by taek-bae. The jacket was still too baggy and the zipper section of the pants was still longer than I'd asked.
I brought it back and eventually they fixed it to what I like.
Lesson learnt?
Yes. These old boys think they know what's best for you. It kind of defeats the idea of bespoke tailoring where the customer dictates.
You have to be ultra-clear about what you want. |

Is there anywhere else you could suggest for "a really sharp contemporary suit"?
I'm looking to get a few made up but would also like them to be very fitted (dior-esque)... Although I pretty much know exactly what I want, it would help if they were on the same wavelength too. |

If you are off-the-peg size then try the department stores when they are having their very regular sales. Some younger men in Korea are wearing sharp western style suits. |

| i totally agree about the tailors making granddad style suits. the first suit i got made there fit very well, but the style was old. afterwards, i just brought in a suit that i had bought in a store and liked very much - told them to make one almost identical, and they did. |

Like I said I know pretty much exactly what I want (and have pictures of what I want too) it just would be nice to know that they were on the same wavelength...
Got a suit done in hong kong a while back- excellent tailor, very understanding and "with it" with regards to modern styled suits. Cheap too. Would be great to find something similar here. |

The problem is, a tailor might think he doesn't have to do as good a job with yours if you are a repeat customer. I've seen this with other stores not related to tailoring, too.
Anyway, Hamilton Shirts has been the only place mentioned, anyone had good service from any other place in Itaewon or Seoul? I know that in Apgujeong and around Lotte Department store downtown, you can get a better shirt but it'll cost more than 100,000 won. |
