This recent UK heist on a cash depot reminds me of a similar attempt in Toronto back in 1991. I was working for Sun Life then in one of their downtown office towers, alas I wasn't working in the corporate tower with the $3.00 subsidized salmon steak lunches. Anyway, our building was right next to the Bank of Canada's Toronto cash depot. One day the whole area was under police lock down. Someone attempted to rob the depot. The guy who tried the robbery figured he had the perfect plan:

Step 1: Dye your hair so no one can identify you on security cam tapes.

Step 2: Dye your hair bright, bright orange so no one can spot you in a crowd as you get away.

Step 3: Make some fake looking bomb. Threaten to blow up the bank if they don't hand over $3 million.

Step 4: Once you've got the cash, time your get away so you're trying to get away during the start of the downtown rush hour. Your getaway plan involves driving away in rush hour traffic and, naturally, getting stuck in traffic 2 blocks from the scene of the crime.

Step 5: Don't cover up your flaming orange hair while you sit in traffic two blocks from the scene of the crime.

Step 6: Get spotted because of your flaming orange hair and arrested two blocks from the scene of the crime.

Step 7: Never worry about living expenses again for the next 10-15 years. And, because you're a young man in ass pounding prison, your body becomes a form of currency.

I don't know what he was thinking. It turned out the guy was a criminology grad from UBC. An embarrassment two fold: One, it appears criminology students aren't learning much in the way of ethics. Two, the bar for the genius types they let into the program must be set way way low.

Sadly, they aren't all 'criminal masterminds' like that guy.
