check it out -

I figured its either a foreigner hating Korean person - or a JEOLOUS foreign teacher envious of other foreign teachers......

This is my issue:

I have researched the law and I know how it works when it comes to visas. So I know that it is illegal for anyone with a teaching visa to work at any other place than their hagwon (or place of employment.)

My point is that, why do workers on an E2 visa get deported and fined for teaching private classes or modeling or working with TV or movies. But those people on an E2 visa who DJ in clubs (and get paid for it) in Hong Dae and Apkujeong don't have to answer for their illegal activities? These people, in clubs like Ohoo, tool, joker red, and cargo in hongdae, and clubs in apkujeong like club garden or whatever, never get caught. Yet they are up there every weekend getting paid... it should not be possible. ...

An angry Korean .. . .

Thank you for visiting the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency(SMPA) Website.

We will investigate regarding your inquiry and do some legal action against them.

Thank you.?

Thank you for your reply concerning my issue of Foreigners working illegally as club DJs. I understand it takes time for an investigation. But if you were to show up at between 12am or 2am on a Friday or Saturday you will see them.

After being out on Friday and Saturday Night at a club in Hongdae called Ohoo I saw two foreigners djing to a packed club. I asked the manager if they were entertainers in Korea. She said they were english teachers working on weekends as DJs (one guy works for a university). Once again I ask how is this possible? I had a friend of mine deported for teaching a private class. Yet these DJs are making money illegally and taking potential work away from us Kroean DJs. There names (Todd & Dylan) are posted on posters and flyers all over Seoul. How do they get away with this?

Although it is signed "an angry Korean" - I think it may be a foreigner - because what Korean person who would be "angry" at foreigners would know good english (an angry NOT a angry) - and also wouldn't "an angry korean" place a report on the Koreans forum - not the "foreigners forum"...

any comments?

Grrrr.... that really pisses me off. Seriously, why do others have to (for no reason) trample on the enjoyment of others??? Especially since it is harming no one. At M2, and other clubs, there are some astounding DJs. I know a few DJ English teachers and they know their stuff. The Korean DJs are good too, but nobody makes me have fun like the foreigners... and I think many Koreans would agree. If the police really take action against these DJs, this would mean the end of some really cool night life. Korea would even become more boring!! This benefits no one!!

Anyhow, shouldnt they make it possible for you to apply for a side job that isn't related to English teaching???? Why can't a DJ apply for something in addition to an E2? Does it make sense? Why would a hakwon care if some guy is DJing? Why, I say, Why!!?

and the cops have nothing!!!
so this case wont even get investigated! now bringing over big name DJS and they didnt have proper visas and were getting paid with Korean money then that might be an issue I think we covered this with the PVD show.. but local ESL'ERS spinning some vinyl its all good, if the owner just says he wanted to play.. we dont pay him and the teacher agrees the cops will walk out as fast as they walked in..

Chances are it's a disgruntled waygookin. There aren't all that many fluent Koreans who give a rat's patootie about foreigners moonlighting.

Even if you don't get paid, you could be breaking the law. You might need a certain kind of entertainer visa.

This represents an exciting new frontier of bribery that the police & immigration ought to be looking into very closely. No arrests or deportations are necessary -- as long as everyone keeps up with the payments. Twisted Evil

(yeah, yeah, I've been here too long. Now tell me something I don't know.)

I guess the fact of the matter is, don't break the law. Even if you're a supercool DJ type.

Actually you are dead wrong. It is up to the E-2 holder to prove that they are volunteering. The police and/or immigration do not have to prove a thing if they catch you doing something that a person would normally get a salary. If someone has it out for you, you can actually get deported giving free English lessons at your church or whatever.

It's in the immigration law, I just cannot find it on their site right now.

thats like saying, if BBKING walked into a restaurant in korea and MR KIM said BB would you please play us a song!? and bb said! of course!!
so he pulls out his guitar and starts playing some tunes! then the police come in! and he is deported?

if magic johnson came to korea on holiday and he was walking through the park and he came across a basketball court and their was a game on and he offered to coach the team for the day! and the police saw him! is he deported?

why is someone deported for volunteering? I heard it was the case in korea for certain jobs.. but its retarted!

Your examples are so far-fetched they just aren't comparable. B.B. King isn't Joe Blow DJ/English teacher on an E-2 visa. (Not that your average Korean cop or immigration agent would recognise the former, however.) Playing impromptu blues guitar at a restaurant isn't a paying profession, whereas being a club DJ presumably is.

btw, what's a "magic johnson"?
