I heard that a doctor found some traces of the Spanish Flue in pigs in Korea back in the summer. Did anyone else hear of it? The guy's a researcher at a uni in Daejeon. Would really like to know.
Cheers!

"Spanish" flu was the 1918 flu epidemic that pretty much ended WW1 and brought most of the world to a screeching halt for about 6 months. There's an excellent book on the subject called The Great Influenza by John Berry (or Barry, I forget.)
I haven't heard this story in particular, but I find it highly unlikly that they found the exact same virus because in order to survive viruses must evolve. And if it is the exact same virus, it's nothing to worry about because most of the world's population is already immune, especially Westerners.
Spanish flu, bird flu, regular flu, nothing to worry about. When it happens you'll deal. Worry more about food poisoning. That at least you have some control over. |

Yikes! I wish they had meant Spanish Fly. That site is way out there on the lunatic fringe. I should have checked it before I posted. Then I would have recommended Good Omens by Terry Prachett and Neil Gaimen. It's a funny take on the Second Coming. No kidding. I also would have directed you to hemorragic fevers like ebola. Much cooler than a simple flu and fairly easily transmitted. If the four horsemen are coming, I think they'd go for ebola over a flu.
Gosh, I knew that Catholic education would come in handy some day. |

No no, you've got it backwards. They found the Korean flu in Spain. |

ah yes, the Lee Chun-Soo virus.
Hard to catch but isn't very dangerous. It causes headaches, irritability and a general sense of dissatisfaction. It lasted for about a season there before it went away. More recently it was found again back in Korea. Many people have been exposed to it but few have been infected. |
