i'm not sure if anyone else noticed but if you check the korean papers they claim that korea finished 7th in the overall medal rankings when they actually finished 9th.. now if they hadn't shown those speed skating races repeatedly all day i could have let this slide... busted..

they did however finish 7th in terms of the gold medals....

No deception.

Koreans count gold medals not overall medal count.

Same thing happened in the summer olympics.

Bronze medals are absurd to them, met with a scoff and almost shame.

Not true, we all know that if Korea had 1 gold medal and 15 silver and 10 bronze they would count the other way to again make themselves look better.

I think the way they should count them is the point system.

3 points for a gold

2 for a silver

and

1 for a bronze

I think this is a decent way to do it and I think it puts into perspective who is dominating the olympics. If you count just golds, it makes Norway look like they did nothing all olympics, even though they had 19 medals.

Let's try this system:

Germany = 63

USA = 52

Canada = 48

Austria = 48

Russia = 44

Norway = 31

Sweden = 30

Switzerland = 28

Korea = 26

Italy = 21

China = 19

(Yes, I skipped a few, but I don't want to do more)

So, the new rankings are:

1. Germany
2. USA
3. Canada and Austria
5. Russia
6. Norway
7. Sweden
8. Switzerland
9. Korea
10. Italy
11. China

Not much changes, but I still like this system more. Korea is in eighth place though. Not bad for only participating in one sport, but doesn't give your country much different areas to be proud about, or rather to develop.

Actually, Koreans are doing it right. They are 7th on the Final Rank. Rank by total number of medals is less important.

"The Olympic rules lay out that the Final Rank should be based on the overall number of gold medals won.
The position of each nation in the Rank by total number of medals won is determined by the total number of medals won.
Nations with an equal number of medals won will be assigned the same position (indicated with an "=").
Nations in the following positions will be assigned a position with a successive ordinal to that of nations preceding it."

The same can be said of countries who count rank by total number of medals.

Estonia beat Norway in the olympics. 3 medals vs. 19 medals. Yeah, that system really works.

Anyway you slice it, Korea did well for an Asian nation. Looking at the top 10, you have Korea and then China with 1.3 billion people. The number one nation in Asian Winter Olympic sports!

Or if Bode Miller didn't just choke in 5 events. Still a few medals behind Germany though.

Actually the rankings also varied from network to network too....

Some use gold medals to rank nations (so some nations are higher than others who have more overall medals but fewer golds)

This is what Korea seems to have done......they are not alone in doing this....

I think it should be overall medal total but there seems to be many standards of measure out there....no need to get bent out of shape with this.
