So, I've been in the position of trying to recruit teachers for my gf's school lately and the process has been interesting (... to say the least). Not all the applicants have been 'special' but there has been a fair few interesting ones out there...

* The guy who sent a photo of himself completely dressed in a santa claus outfit

* The guy whose resume stated that the CIA have been persecuting him for his whole life.

* The girl who wanted 2.3 because she had an education masters, had fluent Korean and had worked in a hogwon in Korea for 6 months. Each of these points turned out later to be untrue.

* The girl who asked me 5 emails in a row where the school was in Korea. I responded each time that it was in the city of Daegu. Then I'm finally talking to her on the telephone and she asks 'which part of Seoul wil I be in again ?'

* The guy who had 'anger issues' and had been through about 8 schools in 2 years. His resume included gems like ... 'through my vast ESL experience I've learned not to lose it compleletly when someone asks me to finish grading during my lunch-break'.

* People with sexually explicit email addresses ... [email protected]

* At least two people who have backed out at the last minute without so much as an email or phone call.

* Various one line job applications - like " I'd like to teach at your school cuz I have to leave here pretty soon - pls send me the details"

... the fun never stops ...

My sympathies to the guy being hunted by the CIA. I know what a hell that can be.

I would've said that you should hire suzyblowjob, but it's rather unbelievable. Anyway, I'd hire her instead of Santy. She'd come in rather handy around payday.

The best is when they don't tell you little bits of important information.

1: One person talked about how qualified he was and could work after he gets out of prison ( Shocked ).

2: The many people who talk and accept the job then tell you they already have a visa with a bad boss in Korea. Why are they accepting the job?

3: The people who accept the job and then talk to their "expert" friend who procedes to inform about everything they should demand.
examples: Advance money, cell phone, new clothes, etc...
before having even worked a day. (They think the school is desperate for a white face and will pay anything.)

4:The people who try to use a fake name in Korea....the name they give you is not the same as the name on the passport..and they hope no one will notice. Mad (Immigation doesn't find this funny).

God, me too. Those CIA boys are a real pain.

Remember, its not paranoia if theyre really following you.

By the way, I apologize if the noise in my head is disturbing anyone.

No, Im not a schizophrenic, and neither am I!

I submitted a full uni application with a long cover letter and copies of all my docs, but forgot to put my phone number or email address on my CV. I later got a call from one of my references - they called her wondering how they could get ahold of me for an interview. Fortunately by then I had already accepted another job.

The guy whose E-mail was 2 lines long, and more or less said, "I am from England and have a CELTA ... feel free to e-mail me back, and I will begin the process of considering your school." Laughing

Not joking!

Give this person credit for being honest.

I did not recommend for hiring the woman who wrote a 4 or 5 pager detailing how growing up in a log cabin in the backwoods of Ontario had led her to read a lot of 'good literature' and made her qualified to teach English.

Last year, this guy came for an interview at my hogwan. He walked into the school while typing a message on his cellphone and gave a nod to everyone around. Not the best first impression!
Then, he took the liberty to investigate every nook and cranny of the hogwan alone! He didn't even tell anyone where he went. We wondered where he was when it was time to sit down for the interview. We found him in the kitchen.
But here's the weird part...he was definitely trippin' on something. His eyes were completely bloodshot. He told us he was super tired because he had been on the phone to the Japan's Koizumi all night, discussing "things we will find out about soon enough"!
During the interview, he said only he and president Ro Moon-Hyun really knew Korea and Koreans. He told this to my Korean supervisor.
Finally, as he left after the interview, he left with my supervisor a little stub of paper on which his email address and phone number were printed, to give to the "hot native teachers who work here"...
If my mind serves me right, he said he was working for some arm of the Korean government, which made me question why he wanted to work at a kids' hogwan.
Strange, n'est-ce pas?!! Confused

This guy blew in who was 45 and seemed rich. He'd been in Korea four years already and he had a villa he bought. And so on. The boss just thought he was perfect. He was showing them photos of his dogs and girlfriend and vehicle. He seemed so right, settled, charming, saavy. He was it. So they wasted no time having him practice teach and off he went on the visa run to Japan and back in a day.

He only stayed working there for a couple of weeks. He seemed like he was doing a great job. I didn't know the gory details but the boss didn't seem to like him at all anymore and came lunging into the staff room like a medieval jouster prodding a dragon with a lance whenever she talked at him. Once it was about 'no handouts'. He was making handouts which took and accented the text material, drawn off the net and printed out at home. We were not to do this! The boss stipulated this to me and I wasn't making any handouts. But within his earshot. He snarled. Grimmaced. Beetle browed muttering hissing at her. She dashed off.

That day there was some big event going on. I guess he was in a class of teenage girls and one of them was too close to the window so he grabbed her, or something. And they took offence and one of them spoke to him in banmal. From being too familiar with them, maybe. Speaking too easily with them. They said he said things that were not like a teacher would say. He got really angry when one got smart allecky with them and there was a big blowup like adolescents versus the guy shrieking back. He wrote a letter in English explaining to the boss what, exactly, had transpired in that room. She didn't read it. For some reason(s) he was at odds with her.

Another thing was smoking in class. Yeah. He gave the kids these handout/worksheets and said go to them. While he lay with his head in his hands. Or stood by the window smoking in class. Unbelievable, huh? He was warned about the smoking but persisted. The secretary caught him and said not to do it and he calmly replied, 'call the fire department'.

There was a big event when he left. He wanted to be paid up and waited at the front desk. I mean this guy was a big man and was leaning ham-fistedly at the front desk refusing to leave until he got his money paid in full. And more than that, some other money basically just getting all he could possibly get because he was angry. It all seemed so high strung. And nuts.
