I arrived back to Korea last night after a month long holiday in America. Was good to go back, but changes! Thats another post... anyways, I got here, tired, ready to go home.. shuttles were closed so had to get a taxi. The guy said what I thought was 17,000 won to Seoul.. "good price" he says.. I said wow that is, then asked the guy who worked at the airport.. the information attendent.. is that a good price? he says sure, thats a good price...

we drive 100 plus down the freeway speeding to my home. No probs. Im freakin tired and Im a lead foot myself.

We arrive, I give him 17 plus 5 as a tip. He went fast!

He throws a fit! 17, he says, 17.... I say do you mean 70!

His freakin prononucation is horrible. He told me 70 at the airport! Good price indeed, then bumps up to 19 for the toll charges... 90! 90000 won from airport to Seoul.

Give me a freakin break. I told him the misunderstanding then offered the 40 that it really takes from airport to Seoul, plus 20 for toll... he threw my money and started going off on the USA!

Welcome back to Korea. Lied to and racisim.

I love some things I see here. The kindness, the generosity but I wonder how much of it is true.

Im taking the good things and leaving this country in August when my contract is finished.

Im so disappointed with the welcome I got last night. Next time Ill get the amount on paper so there are no problems. STupid jerk of a taxi driver and that liar at the airport.

and to Americans, Im starting to feel a little almost guilty... giving to this country who hates my country when my own country seems to be crumbling... anyone feel the same?

that sucks- a taxi drove me to the airport for 10,000 yesterday as well.

Those guys who work late at night are shifty individuals, there are so few passengers at that time of night.

Uh, he's Korean and he lives in Korea. Why would it be incumbent on him to learn your language to communicate? You are soliciting a service from him. How hard would it have been to say "chil-man-won?"

And thus I begin my career as an apologist.

yes, and i know my Korean numbers... yes, i should have confirmed what i heard but when i hear 17,000.. which seems reasonable... i figure yeah, okay lets go home its freakin 1am and ive been traveling for over 13 hours staright! shortskirt.... get off it.. maybe he should have used his own freakin language cuz then i would have understood him!

10,000 won.... wow, that taxi driver ..what a freakin assh*le. I got his card.... not sure how I can get him in trouble when he presumably told me the correct amount to begin with.

Im a bad american, according to him, because I didnt confirm what I heard.. his ridiculous obviously overpriced fare which he refused to bend on.

Not end of story. I learned another lesson in life. There are a lot of assho*es out there willing to screw you and lie to you. Im not one of them though I often let others think they are better than me when they are probably just crap underneath it all. There are some good ppl. Not many. That taxi driver and liar of a airport worker are crap underneath it all.

Onto next lesson.

With those guys, it's buyer beware. Getting a taxi for 17 000 is suspicious in the first place.

Why didn't you just tell him to stick on the meter? It's always cheaper.

I sympathise, I have been ripped off many times by taxi drivers, and I hate it. But if you:ve been here a while you should know that 17 and 70 are two very hard sounds for the Koreans to differentiate, so yes, you should have confirmed in Korean, especially with a night taxi from the airport. They know they have you cornered, and are more likely to go for the rippoff.

Much as it galls me (Razz) I guess I'll have to take your word on that, but it certainly isn't my impression. Everyone I know has stories similar to this one -- not necessarily the lying and trickery, but arriving after 8 or 9 o'clock at night, and not getting to the kerb till 10 or after. By then the entire airport's turned into a pumpkin, and everyone scrambles for transportation home in the dark. I'd say there are too many passengers arriving at that time of night. And there always have been. Or so it seems.

The "deluxe" taxis with a higher flag rate are obliged to use the meter but the other guys arent & usually wont. 17000 should have struck you as ridiculously cheap. You might have talked him down a bit from 70, beforehand, but not much. I took a metered ride in a regular taxi from Gangnam a couple years ago (to save missing a flight) & it came to 70000 (including toll).

I think the OP screwed up. The cabbie was just doing his job.

I said I did and you know, not any of you had anything to say on my side.. i swear what the hell is wrong with ppl... that cabbie was an asshole and any decent peson, seeing the mistake would have come down a bit on fare.... whatever, its over and obviously talkng to you strangers siding with him, his racist comments and all... well the whole freakin world could end and I wouldnt be a bit surprised.

thanx for proving my point.

btw, if you paid 70,000 on purpose to go to the airport, well hehehe.... that may be an even greater mistake than mine! You took it, on purpose!
