| I had a lot of trouble last semester with students not having any idea what classroom commands like "Repeat after me" and "Take out your books" meant, so I think I will be doing that. Get them going on that, right away, because it will be easier that way (as a game, of course). |
Good idea. For the past two years, I've made a B5-sized handout with about 25 common classroom English expressions (with the Japanese translations). Repeat ad nauseum (sp?) and then play a game. I'd mail it to you but it's in Japanese, which might trigger cries of "Dokdo is ours!" from your students.
As for the "the K-teachers don't know what's going on, either" - they're having you on. If they run their schools anything like the Japanese (and they do in many other respects, e.g. cleaning), they've probably written the schedule out and written it on the teacher's room blackboards. Best press them on the issue lest you get blindsided. |

No, trust me, some of them are as genuinely clueless as me, particularly the new guy who just asked me what time we can go home. |

My new school they were making up & changing the schedule every few minutes. Assembly started late. 1000 middle school girls in an echoing gym ignoring a long-winded speech from the principal, then the introduction of teachers. That part I like -- I figure I'm the foreign culture guy so I wave rather than bow & a big scream goes up. Then they all sing the school song & however bad the tune I still get a chill hearing that many massed voices.
Opening ceremonies were to be followed by an all-staff lunch at 12:30 but at 12:25 they announced it would be dinner at 5 or maybe 5:30 instead at some undetermined restaurant. So the english teachers decided to have lunch together instead -- oops, everyone too busy. So my co-teacher & I went out for lunch with a plan to meet the others after for coffee -- one showed up, an hour late.
Those two went back to the school but I just came home. I declined the invite by phone a few minutes ago to join all the school staff for raw fish. Probably would have been a good solidarity move to go but I'd had enough forced pleasantries for one day. Not all forced, & not unpleasant, but after a few weeks off a bit of an onslaught.
It was exciting being back in a school. A lot of the girls I met in the halls were wide-eyed & giddy about greeting a foreigner but I know from experience that will settle into something more natural before long. Innocent & cute.
After a boys school last year I was looking forward to cleaner environs, but this school was a mess. The homeroom teachers were supposed to organize a general cleanup but apparently no one bothered. Thats okay, the school has a city-wide reputation for being the most laidback & that suits me. I taught the same place 4 years ago & it was a good run. I'm pleased to discover the men teachers smoking lounge is still intact, ashtrays overspilling, same as ever but they've added a nice widescreen tv.
Now I'm free again till my classes start the 14th. |

No classes until the 13th. I get to sit in the staff room and make up lesson plans. Lucky me. I did get a partial schedule though. Three afternoon classes (double periods) on Monday and Wednesday (Grades 1-6) and nothing from 1 PM onwards on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. But I probably won't get to go home early (we have a new VP who seems a bit of a martinet.) |

Me neither. I will probably just be sitting in my classroom sneezing my head off. |
Still sitting in my classroom sneezing. But, I should have my schedule by the end of the day |
