ok, this is a weird one that i have a few questions about. i work at a private middle school in the Wisconsin program. There is a high school that is connected to my school (same name, owner, etc). the middle school principal just jumped up to the high school over vacation. and their foreign teacher's contract ran out. the highschool now does not have enough funds to hire a full time foreign teacher.

the high school asked me to work one day a week there, teaching five (50 minute classes) first question, how does this work for "working at another place of employment" they are connected, just seperate by being "middle" and "high" school. and i would then have permission from the school, so i assume there is no problem here, right?

second, there are two options for my schedule, either i do my regular 17 classes at the middle school and add the 5 for the high school, OR i simply cut my classes at the middle school. second question, the high school offered to pay me for the "extra" time. obviously i would ask for a lot of money if i do all 22 classes, than if i cut my middle school classes, so, what are some reasonable numbers?

If I cut my middle school classes, then I really am not teaching extra classes, I just need to plan for another grade level. so it would be kind of a kick in the face to the middle school to cut their class time, get paid the same from them, and get paid a ton from the high school. so what is a reasonable amount if i cut my middle school classes, and if i dont?

lastly, this is a weird situation, because i feel like no matter what i do, someone will get screewed over. if i say no to the high school, they are out a teacher, if i say yes, then the middle school loses my class time that i am contracted for (my school has been absolutely awesome, so i do feel obliged to honor my contract, i am even typing on the school provided laptop...) or i do both and maybe overload myself with extra classes and planning time ( i know you hogwon teachers teach this many classes, but at public schools we have a lot of other time consuming stuff to do) . I might be able to handle the extra workload, or might find i cant but be in a situation where i cant back out.

so has anyone been in a situation like this? what is your advice? my school has always been great, everyone, students, teachers, administration, the principal (that is now at the high school and asking for my help). they have done everything, extra time off, time off on test days, i live in a three bedroom apt... you name it, i got it. so i honestly want to help them out. thanks

First off, if you want to work anywhere but your original school, as specified in the contract and signed off by Immigration, you must get their (Immigration's) approval on the back of your ARC or it's illegal. It doesn't matter if they're owned by the same person, same name, whatever. If they're different schools, you need immi approval.

Second, on the pay. You only teach 17 classes and they want 5 more? Lucky! If you do teach all 22 at that point, just ask for a raise. Going on the assumption that you make 2.0 for the 17, ask for maybe 2.5 or so for the extra classes. That works out to about 25.000 a class, which is a good OT rate, and you get the extra cash.

Lastly, I know people in public schools who teach several different levels, 25 total classes or so, and don' get burned out. Yes, it will take a bit to get used to it all, but you'll handle it I'm sure.
