It doesn't cost them anything to write a quick release letter, and it could be good to have it. Why not get one just in case?

I think that if you're going to teach in Japan, that a release letter isn't needed. After the original contract end date comes about, you can apply for a new job without a release letter. The LOR is only needed if you want to teach again at another institution in Korea to start before the end of your current employment's original end date.

I don't see why you need an LOR.

u don't even need a letter of release. when i went home b/c of a family emergancy, i just dropped off my arc at imm at the the airport. when i came back a month later i had no problems getting a new e2 visa for my new school.

Everyone says the OP has little or nothing to fear, so my question isn't directed at him or even related to his situation.

What happens if Immigration does suspect somebody is doing a midnight run?

You're at the airport, you've checked your luggage, got your boarding pass, gone through security, you're on airside, ticket in hand, your flight departs in possibly minutes... What are they going to do to you? Rough you up? Be mean and say hurtful things to you?

What is the hands-down most nightmarish Midnight Express-esque scenario? Tell you that you can't work in Korea for the next two years? In that case,

It's not illegal to quit. Besides, what can anyone do if you leave? The answer is: nothing. Can you go to the supermarket? Yes. Can you leave the country? Yes.

If you are leaving the country for another job why do you even care. Do you think Korea gives a rats a$$ if you leave.

I will never understand this train of thought. Unless you are wanted by the police or interpol. They, like most coutnries, stare at your passport, type away and scowl. They might ask for your ARC card.

Is there a gulag with foreign white teachers wasting away because they didn't get a release letter???? Probably not. This is not N. Korea. You can leave whenever you want. Now if your school reports you as a child molestor or drug dealer...you will have a problem. If you are reported as a runner you may or may not be able to return to korea until your last Visa expires.

So just go have a great experience in Japan and don't make jokes about bombs in the airport.

Why would your boss have it? Are you required by law to carry either it or your passport around with you at all times?
