If I think about it, one student saw the aftermath of a jumper. Some guy took a plunge off his balcony onto a parked car below. Another student saw a kid fall off his bike while crossing a bridge, tumble off the bridge, and get swept away by the water. Another kid saw some girl go after a coin she dropped on the road and a bus whipped around the corner and ran her over. |

Well I guess now I'll have to ask them about it ... except in one class where a girl's father died in a car accident back in December. |

Turn off the TV etc and the instances of seeing people being killed at least on a daily basis will be nil. |

Last year a guy jumped off one of the high rise apartments next to my school with 3 or 4 classes out for gym at the time. |

I think the Finns still have most of the developed world beat for suicide but I saw on a stats page once that Korea has the highest death rate in the world for people "falling from buildings". This would imply people in Korea tend to off themselves jumping off of balconies. |

The number of suicides rose to an all-time high of 12,000 last year as more people took their own lives amid the prolonged economic hardship. Suicide became the fourth largest cause of death as 25.2 out of 100,000 people committed suicide, up five notches from ninth place 10 years ago, the National Statistical Office (NSO) reported Wednesday.
Suicides Hit Record High

According to the National Statistical Office, 10.5 people per 100,000 committed suicide in 1994, but the number more than doubled to 25.2 in 2004. Currently, an attempted suicide takes place on average every five minutes and "successful" ones every 45 minutes -- over 10,000 people kill themselves in Korea every year.

How did you let this come up as a topic of discussion in your class?
Okay class, today we will be discussing Irregular Verbs.
Now what is the simple past tense of "blow", as in to "blow your brains out"?
Would you say, "I once saw a guy who blowed his brains out."?
No... you would say, "I once saw a guy who blew his brains out."
Past participle? "His brains were blown out."
Very good. What about dive, as in to dive off the balcony of your high rise apartment?
Dove, right? The man dove to his death... |

The morning of a big test day as 2000 students were filing into school,
a high school senior jumped from the roof of the 5-story building. He died.
Staff kind of dismissed the incident telling us, "He was unstable." DUH |
