|
|
I just looked at www.handouts.com and it seemed useful. I'm calling on all Dave's ESLer's to compile a list of the best free websites and pay websites for ESL handouts and lesson plans.
Also, for public school teachers how do you intend to organize your extra class this semester. I was thinking of changing mine into more of a club rather than a class. Last year I found most students wanted to learn, but not with the traditional lesson style. Most wanted a relaxed environment where they could make friend and learn some English
I'm anxious to hear your thoughts on these two matters. |

Beware of the dreaded "Handoutitis"......also its cousin, the lethal, "occupiedatiosis". They can result in students who know much but speak little.................or is the know little, speak much???????
Anyways, in my opinion, a handout is only as good as the teacher that uses it. You can't just zap it together and hand it out.....I cut and use pieces, only pieces. YOU must own it and believe in it and love it. Only then will the handout (full of your love), be magical and do the magic that love can do.....

A couple of comments above are very important.
I've seen many teachers quickly printing off something they've found on the Internet to give to kids as an easy teaching solution. The next day they repeat the same procedure, printing worksheets that have no relation to the previous day. Textbooks provide structured content for a purpose. Worksheets need to also follow a structure. If we just handout worksheets and nothing more, there's no role for the native English speaking teacher.
Please consider how to 'teach' with worksheets that you find. Many worksheets for kids on the Internet might provide fun games and coloring in activities, but ask yourself whether this is really going to improve the kids English. |

activity worksheets should be viewed as supplemental material only, as extra padding, support, consolidation, etc. to the particular lesson you are giving within the larger structure of your curriculum. which, in turn, should have logical internal integrity in terms of building a strong skills base in your students.
they definitely shouldn't form the core of the lesson or overall ESL program.
that said, they can be a valuable teaching tool when there is no textbook -when the teacher is putting together her own lessons and curriculum, when there is a deficit in the text that needs to be addressed, or when students need extra practice with some particular grammar point.
but to not have an overall logical and effective game plan, curriculum/program for your students is to lose the plot and is a tremendous disservice to students...
this point separates the sideshow bobs from real teachers i think. |

Actually, I'm never sober. I prefer my own magic carpet ride to the morbid, grey shuffle of every day.
But don't Korean mothers teach their kids not to accept handouts? That there is no such thing as a free ride? I don't accept handouts..........
