Come back from an overseas trip last wednesday evening from japan...
I am the only whitey on the plane which is fine...go through customs, get the baggage,etc..
I am probably the last person to walk out the gate and there is a guy there holding a sign with an english name on it looking pretty desperate and then he sees me...
Here is the brief conversation..
Rec: Hello, welcome to korea, Mr. Jones??
Me: I am not Mr. Jones???
Rec: You come on Japan plane??
Me: Yes but I have lived here for years...
Rec: (A bit puzzled) You yes, no different white person on plane...
Me: I am sorry but i think he may have changed his mind
(I show him my alien card)
Rec: Was there different canadian(I am not Canadian) on plane??
Me: as in whitey, no, just me...
Rec: Where is he??
Me: i don't know, bye bye
I think what has happened is either he has balked in Canada or got off in Japan and got a free air ticket to there... |

Actually, what a smart guy:) He probably wanted to go to Japan instead, got a free ticket and just stayed. Hilarious. |

| Maybe Mr. Jones isn't even a white guy. If the recruiter has seen his photo he is not likely to take the OP as Mr. Jones. If he has never seen Mr. Jones photo, how does he know he is necessarily white? Unless he asked specifically when he was recruiting him if he was white? |

I'm sure he's seen him since everyone in Korea asks for a photo with your job application and you need two photos for a visa (Korea end).

I don't know if he was white but as soon as the recruiters eyes locked onto me he came straight for me(I didn't go to him) so I am assuming that they were expecting a whitey. |

You really need to look at yourself in the mirror. See what a sad, sad person you are. Being jaded is no excuse, so don't try coming back with that line of thinking. |

| In addition to the fact that it's just plain wrong, don't forget that also this sort of thing only hurts other teachers. If enough people pull this stunt, pretty soon getting the school to pay for your flight over will be a thing of the past, and everyone will have to pay for their flights up front. |

You (not only you so don't take offense) need to relax. I've been lucky that I haven't really been screwed over by hagwans (that much), but a lot of people have really been f*cked by a lot of unscrupulous hagwan owners and managers. It's good once in a while to see the shoe on the other foot.

This will end ESL education in Korea. Face it, Koreans need "whitey" or some reasonable facsimile standing at the front of the class and will have to take that chance because nobody will actually pay their own way to come to Korea. I know I would have never come without my airfare paid. And who can honestly say they would have? Not many I bet. |
