the problem for poor arcade fire is that, believe it or NOT, they all had day jobs up until only a few months ago...they had a JUNO nomination and they still couldn't support themselves on their music.
Because canadians like crappy music?
No. cause canadians steal GOOD music.
I feel bad for them. I don't think they begrudge the internet TOO much cause i think that it played quite a roll in getting them started .

Quote:
the lowest of the low, sam roberts (just givin' props to my peeps), metric, spirit of the west, blue rodeo, jazzberry ram, the dears, the smalls, etc. etc. etc.
My buddy Ridley Bent is, thus far, one of the most underrated artists, but i can BET that within a year, he'll be rolling in it. He released his record last fall and he's doing big tours this coming summer.
He's openned for some BIG names too (i was reminded cause of this list).
Sam Roberts (3 shows), Lowest of the low (3 night stink, in january i think...), Tom Wilson (Canadian S.S.), and ol'...what's their nuts...Elvis Costello, Cat Power AND Billy (F***ING) bragg.

metric is DEFINATELY underrated.
Spirit of the West CERTAINLY had their time in the sun. I haven't heard any new stuff, but it seems like the whole rock/pop celtic music phase has passed through canada.

There are no mentions for the Crash Test Dummies I see.

Good thing too. CTD are a GREAT band! from Winnipeg. Singer/writer/guitarist Brad Roberts is a talented guy in my opinion.

I bought the Arcade Fire CD, and found that it didn't live up to the hype surrounding it.
That's why I'd consider them somewhat overrated.
That's certainly not the band's fault though- they didn't create the hype.
(Hope that clarifies things a little, Chillin)
I don't know about the average music buyer these days, but I've been buying all my CDs.
I'll download stuff to check it out, a few songs or so, and if I like it I'll go out and buy it.
Now that I've quit smoking this is where the majority of my disposable incomes goes.

No real need (or desire) to start a new thread on this but I thought some of you might be interested in the following article:

The sixth edition of Canadian Music Week kicked off with a bang Wednesday with the presentation of the Canadian Independent Music Awards.

Up-and-coming acts such as the Arcade Fire, Bedouin Soundclash and Death From Above 1979 were among those honoured at the evening ceremony at Toronto's lakefront Docks Concert Theatre.

Montreal indie darlings Arcade Fire took two awards: best album for the Grammy-nominated Funeral and best video for their track Neighbourhood 3 (Power Out).

Reggae-influenced rockers Bedouin Soundclash, from Kingston, Ont ., won best single for When the Night Feels My Song.

Toronto duo Death From Above 1979 was named best group while Dallas Green won the solo artist honour. Green, usually the frontman for Alexisonfire, released the album Sometimes, produced under his solo project, City and Colour.

International artists honoured at the ceremony included Scottish rockers Franz Ferdinand (best international artist or group), British band Bloc Party for its album Silent Alarm (best international album) and Norway's Rumble in Rhodos (best new international album or group).

Specific genre winners included guitarist Garrett Mason (best blues artist), violinist James Ehnes (best classical artist), singer-songwriter Brad Johner (best country artist), drummer Sandro Dominelli (best jazz artist) and singer Divine Brown (best R&B artist).

The awards gala also featured performances from Stars, Elliott Brood, the evening's rising star award winner, and the Road Hammers. The night's two inductees into the Indies Hall of Fame – the Pursuit of Happiness and the Parachute Club – also performed.

Canadian Music Week, which runs through Saturday, is the annual conference and showcase of the country's independent musicians. In addition to concerts and industry meetings throughout the city, the festivities include the Canadian Radio Music Awards, to be held on Saturday.

the great music canadians make will, it seems, always be little more than independent in the US. For some reason, its the crap that they tend to peddle that gets such a great reaction.

note: While both of those bands of kickASS names, i'd have to say bedouin soundclash is better

Don't care much about either, I just want to know where the f__k are the New Pornographers? And Bedouin Soundclash, well, see enouigh Zellers commercials on tv and you start to get sick of the one single they have that is being marketed to the hilt...

I saw Bedouin Soundclash play once a few years ago. They sounded like someone had rammed a reggae band and an emo band together. It was talented, but the lead singer's voice was just wrong.

Oh, for sure. Sorta like why so many people (including myself) are saying the Hip. There are definitely legions of people wetting themselves excessively over Arcade Fire, so I can understand the overrated designation being slapped on 'em. I basically heard them after one mention from my brother (asking me to ask a venue manager ex-girlfriend for concert tickets). I then downloaded a few songs without any idea of the hype around them, and that was that. Rebellion (Lies) did it for me the first time, but I like a lot of their other songs too- only a few boring ones that I skip.

Anyways, I guess I'm part of the reason why they only had day jobs till a few months ago, but I have yet to find the cd in Korea. Haven't really looked, mind you. Embarassed

Nickleback is getting airplay now becuase they are the number one band at the moment their song photograph is eating up the number spot!
they are on randy jacksons number 1 for 11 weeks straight!!

they are not over rated! they are a doing a good job

So just because Britany Spears and N'Sync were topping the charts at one point, does that mean they were doing a good job?

pap I say.

crap they play.

umm yes they were doing a good job!!
personally I like some of BSB, Nsync and brittanys songs..
I mean its not what I would I go and buy , but they are good POP songs
rememeber the key word POP! so for pop songs they are good, I think that one swedish guy pretty much wrote all the songs for them all..
but there were some good songs from them..
