Hello all; what do you all have to say about teaching on Jeju Island and has anyone been to the city of Seogwipo? Any schools there? FYI I am 44 and prefer the peaceful and green side of things. I would love any comments or info on this anyone. Thanks much. Dianne |

Me too. When I was researching Korea I narrowed my shortlist down to Sokcho & Seogwipo. Sokcho panned out first & suits me fine. I suspect Seogwipo would have proven a good hunch too. Best luck. |

She's in the Seoul area now but she used to teach in Seogwipo, and could give you the in's and out's. |

I've visited Jeju do twice. I really like Sogwipo. A few things to remember~ it's a bit isolated in the winter. Hard to get around without a car. Very touristy. It would be our next choice if we were outside of Seoul, I would imagine. If you like nature, you'll love it! |

I lived in Jeju-City for 10 months and it was really good, especially during the summer months. I visited Seogwipo on a number of occasions and it is great, but as others have mentioned it is isolated and I wouldn't recommend living there unless you have a car or motorcycle. I would recommend living in Jeju-City or SinJeju ( the second biggest city on the Island that was many western comforts, yet is surrounded by various beaches. If you live there you can easily visit the the seogwipo area on the weekends (ie. Jungmun beach). The people who seem to have the best experiences are usually the ones that have some kind of transportation.
Best of luck |

Seogwipo has the best scuba diving in all of Korea, if you're into that sort of thing. |

I lived in Seogwipo my first year here, and have since migrated to Jeju City.
I would agree - a car/scooter/motorcycle makes a big difference in lifestyle while here on the island, though there are many people who get by without. |

I loved the place! Peaceful, for sure! The best city on Jeju by far. I felt like Jeju City was a giant room-salon-filled hooker tourist trap for ajosshis.
Get a scooter or a car if you're going to live there. If you are just visiting, the buses are the way to go, IMHO. |

How easy is it to get a scooter on Jeju?
I really like the idea of a year there after seeing pictures of the place it looks beautiful, when is the summer/winter season and how drastic a change is it?
Also living on Jeju do you have to travel to mainland often for anything? My main concern with Jeju is that I would have to travel backwards and forwards to Busan etc to get things I need! Will this be the case?
Would it be better to just visit it at the end of my contract so long as I plan it around the summer and look for a position near a city like Busan for my first time working outside the UK? |

(1) It depends on what you would consider drastic. For me the change is not drastic. However, for you it might be a drastic change.
(2) It depends on what you want and when you want it.
(3) I think visiting first would be a good idea for any place you are considering in Korea.
I'm sure you've seen these but FYI:

As to whether Seogwipo would be a good fit for you, only you can answer that question. Some people really like it for a year or two and then move on. Others start to go stir crazy after 3 months and leave as soon as possible. Others, like myself, settle in Seogwipo and make it their home. I have been here for over 6 years. Ultimately, like anything, it depends on the person.
Oh, and getting a scooter is no easier nor more difficult than any other place in Korea.
Best of luck to you. |

I second that- Lots of us have idly wondered what it would be like to live on Jeju....so if it works out, how 'bout a progress report. Please? |
