I thought Stewart did a good, if not memorable, job. Part of that could be because he had a lesser role in the show. Seriously, he got far less face time than past hosts, didn't he?
I also didn't like the parental "don't pirate films, watch them in a theater where they're meant to be seen" tone of the show. Ironic that the epics montage was watched by people sitting at home in front of a television set.
Show: D-
Stewart: B+
PS - With 3-6 Maffia winning an Oscar, I now believe anything is possible. Tyronne Lue could win NBA MVP and I wouldn't be surprised.
PPS - I've ammended my New Year's resolutions list to include no. 23: be more like George Clooney. Most subdued and classiest (but with some Batman humor thrown in) acceptance speech I've ever seen.

they won best song! for Its hard out there for a pimp!
From hustle and flow
I think the Academy awards are going down hill!
its losing the prestige it once had! sure they try to keep the glitz and glamour of it all! and it still looks that way with the stars dressing up! and far more formal than the globes!
but these days they are giving awards to which ever films made NEWS!
and they are letting anyone into this event!
it wont be long before the oscars will just end up like the grammys or MTV movie awards! just new stars all hanging out and saying YEAH YEAH! well hollywoods glitz have been dying now for 20 years! all the great stars who kept the torch burning are now all too old or either dead!
Its all about young hollywood soon! times are changing!!
who will host next year? |

Quote of the night for me was from the South African director of Tsotsi ~ for Best Foreign Film.
"Ten seconds I just want to thank my fellow nominees who I've become deep friends with. We may have foreign language films, but our stories are the same as your stories. They're about the human heart and emotion.".
I wish he'd said "our stories are as important as your stories". The Hollywood industry is so self-absorbed, the poor little rich kids get this one chance a year to stretch their hearts and at least sound sincere. Last night just seemed like everyone had their scriptwriters working overtime to create that message of moral urgency for whatever bandwagon cause their movie was profiling last year. That Reece Witherspoon eyebrow thing makes me wanna chuck. Oscar, I'm over it. I'm going back to Japan. |

| Yeah, I was gonna mention that I saw Ebert and Roper both praise Jon Stewart's performance as very professional and funny. ("Mithridates" beat me to it, but I thought I'd mentioned it anyhow...) The first review I saw was the stalwartly Republican New York Post's, and they're probably biased by his political jabs at their top guys (and gunslingers...) |

hosting the oscars has got to be one of the hardest gigs in town!
if your name is not billy or BOB you are going to have a real hard time to win the critics! |
Note to Oscar Committee: get Billy Bob Thornton for 2007 show. |

| The only one of the 5 i saw was Crash and it was good but it felt contrived and a little preachy. |
