So you have curled. But have you actually played on a team, in a tournamnet???
I'm guessing you are Canadian. Ironically it is your average Canadian that needs the most education on the sport of curling, confusing it with the game they associate it with. The rest of the world (America included) is watchng the Olympic caliber curling and this defines their view of the sport.
Canadians, having been much more exposed to it, and have their own "conclusions" as to what curling is.
Curling is most similar to baseball or basketball, it can be a casual game, or it could be a sport.
It all depends on how seriously you take it and how hard you challenge your body. |

again, you disply your ignorance. How can someone "guide" a 43 pound stone? |

That's it...I'm petitioning for horse shoe pitching to be included in the next Summer Olympics....and those lawn dart things. And my dog is pretty good at catching frisbees, it's time for an Olympic dog frisbee catching event thingy. Before you babble on about animals in the Olympics, just remember that there are several equestrian events. Then, bass fishing! Darts and billiards! Yes, I could win multiple Olympic medals! |

1. there is no "throwing" of the rock since once it hits the ice it never leaves it
2. You guide/direct the stone where to go - direction, spin..
How much simpler does it get?
You obviously love curling, and good on ya for that, but it is still not a sport my friend. Don't let your love for the GAME blind you to that fact. |

Coming back to my original concept: If you can be world champs and be fat pigs, smoke, and drink beer, and just be in shape enough to slide down some ice, then maybe it's not really a sport. Will being bigger, faster, stronger really give you an edge in curling? |

yep, just a bunch of heffers, in short sleeves, for three hours, in freezing temps....ambling along on ice
Schmirler (the all-time greatest woman curler) some 30 meters from where she threw her rock, after curling for 15 years, I COULDN"T follow a stone for more than 15 meters. And I was a collegiate swimmer. By the way, her ability to follow the rock greatly increases her ability to call sweeping, just one reason why she won the first gold medal in Nagano,
so...like the Olympic motto says.....further...........................
but I bet you didn't know that about curling, did you?
friggin virgins. |

Was Russ Howard fit?
You said it yourself... she could FOLLOW the rock... so sliding across the ice for a long period makes you a great athlete? No. It means you have strong legs..and maybe have better than average dexterity... Many of my older students have strong legs from hiking up mountains all the time.. but some of them are also border-line alcoholics. Korea's curling future perhaps?
Again, you're way past being defensive of the game.. it's a game, a hobby even, but definitely not a sport.
When curlers go bad. Imagine being trash talked by a curler and called a virgin by them growing up? It would've no doubt struck the fear of god into every hockey and football player in town... |

As a beginning curler, I find I'm getting put off of the whole thing just by Sundubu's defence of it!
Clearly we don't have what it takes and may have to try for one of the lesser sports- like biathalon, for example.

I'm sure he's been curling for at least 30 years. And he was the skip, but threw second rocks, therefore avoiding sweeping, and also not delivering the most crucial stones. But curling is a team sport/game and requires a great deal of strategic thinking and calm nerves. Older players can strengthen a team greatly, even while burning the least calories, another thing that makes curling unique.
As I've said before, curling can be a game, or a sport. The unique position of skip enables older players to coninue to play major roles, while not haveing to sweep. And similarly, the vice only sweeps for four rocks an end, as oppsed to 6 for the lead and second.
I used to curl with an ex-NHL player, who would give you all a major education on the subject. At a mere 40, he had to use an aid to deliver stones because his knees couldn't handle a traditional release. And having started the game at 33 or so, he never managed to follow a rock the entire sheet. |
