I can't answer that question being Northern Irish but I do know the etymological origin of the Chavs Belfast cousins known as The Spides.
In the mid-80's, the fashion for those socially-lacking in Northern Ireland, trouser-wise, was the skin-tight, red mainly, plaid/checked jean. Those of us who had learned how to read and write noticed this and compared it to the attire of Spiderman which then was shortened to Spide. And a whole culture had a name. |
