Is this true? I have heard rumors on the other boards: the govt is cracking down even further! ESLteachers will be required to have a TESOL cert to teach here soon- if not already.

i'm not trolling, I seriously heard this. Anybody know? Is a CELTA acceptable instead of a TESOL? (It is the superior qualification, after all).

This could wipe out 60/70% of teachers here in one go. I presume they have the esl-bots already in place?

I'm going to assume that this is just another rumour until someone(on any of the sites) provides some sort of conclusive evidence.

I've already been through the threads you mentioned. Nothing but rumours in them. No links, no nothing. Of course there have been postings looking for people with certs, and BAs, and MAs, and experience. However, besides sealed transcripts, I have seen no changes to immigration requirements posted anywhere. Have you?

No, the story goes is that two posters started talking 'what if' about TESOLs becoming mandatory and that there were some academic debate on the issue elsewhere in Korea, about the hypothetical situation. And then in typical internet forum fashion, hypothetical musing somehow became fact. A big fight ensued between people saying 'if this is fact, show the friggin links' vs 'I don't need to provide proof, cuz I'm cunnectid and in tha know'. To make a long story short: The TESOL certification debate over there was just some random musings that got out of hand. No facts or proof that anything like this is taking shape in the offline world. A new threads starts and people move on.

As Chronic said..

there are no facts it is all speculation and one upmanship...i wouldn't worry too much about it...

The internet is like a forest fire...full of rapidly spreading flames which die out in a matter of days...

Requiring TESOL or any such restriction will never happen. The resulting shortage of legal teachers would bring a political revolution.

Many jobs do demand them, but thats always been the case. MOST jobs however dont. Ive seen no changes at all in job postings. And you would think that would be the case. This makes no sense. The stated government policy is that native speakers will be placed in all the public schools within the next few years. That said, EPIK, GEPIK etc are having trouble filling some of the jobs even now. How do you see that happening if 70% of the teachers are suddenly deemed unqualified?

Realize that the fight on EFL-Law was started by a troll-sock liar who claimed many things which were not true. One of the things is that the rumor also included F5 and F2-1 visa holders and the policy was said to originate at the Ministry of Justice, i.e. immigration. Well, last time I checked immigration has no control over the employment of F5 and F2 visa holders.

Keep watching the Hong Kong ESL market for signs of governments requiring certification. Although they do have the greedy hagwon element where you can walk into a job after just getting off the plane, its really not that prevalent, and on the whole, they really want 'real teachers' with the relevant educational background. A lot of places won't even look at you if you don't have a PGCE or PGDE, which would take a year of your time to get, unlike the CELTA and TESOL.

If anyone in the global ESL market starts making strict governmental requirements for english teachers, they'll be the first. And given the frenetic 'keep up with Jones at all costs, even if it means that you have to turn a blind eye to some laws' business mindset that afflicts Korean society and their general distrust/disregard for govt and policy, expect Korea to be the last of the dominoes to fall, if the global industry starts moving in this direction. YBM/Sisa can pick up the phone and ensure plans like this are shelved, if they felt the supply chain could become seriously threatened.

its really funny what a lot of being are being told, though. I took the TESOL class and was told (as it is printed in the brochures) that to "legally" teach in Korea you need the certificate.
What's even better, is that by the time I took the class, I already had my job here. Perhaps they are misinformed, or its just a way to get more people to take the class.
Most teachers here that I know have never taken the class, and have had no problems.
