Hey, I once took a 5 hour+ bus ride, then sat (er, stood, mostly) on a subway for an hour-and-a-half, going to somewhere I had never even heard of let alone been to, JUST for the interview. And I went back "home" the very next day.
(And yeah, I got the job.) |

Yes, I once spent 10 hrs travel to get a job.(same day) if they had told me exactly what they wanted me for. I could have saved myself 10 hrs travel and still confirmed the job. They sometimes piss us off for no good reason. |

| Well, I have been told that mayve I should blacklist this school and/or take it to the labor board. My manager said a contract is not a piece of garbage like some people think. If I signed the contract and they did too, it should be binding. Hey, if we signed a contract and tried to go back on our word, the hagwon would be angry, huh? Bu I guess it's OK if they do. Not meeting the owner is a sorry excuse for their behavior. If someone has already signed the contract what is the big deal about that person having to travel 2 hours away just to greet the owner. There is plenty of time for that.....But why would you take a school to the labor board and then if you were able to work there I am sure they would try their best to make your life miserable. |

Oh. So you have already signed a contract. That's different. If you sign the contract it's a done and honest deal. You're right. Why go out of your way to meet the owner/director if you have to travel to do it. Just a pain in the butt. I have a hard enough time getting off my butt to go to the supermarket. |

| And when the director emailed me last week he said something about me meeting the owner on Friday, Saturday or any day I can. Then last night on the phone he said we are not sure if we want to hire you because you didn't meet the owner on Friday or Saturday and he wanted to see you and your old school is closed down now and the manager changed at your other school. WEll, those things are BEYOND my control. Is it my fault my first school is closed down now or that the manager changed at my second school? Geez!!! And I already signed the contract about 2 weeks ago, so why was it so important I travel 2 hours away again just to meet the owner? |
They're freaking out because they are not sure you want to work there. Also, they're English is really bad. They're trying to convey to you that you should worry that it could be your fault that the school closed down and the manager changed schools. Seriously. That's where they get out of control.
"I can't meet you on Saturday. I'll see the director when I start. I'm busy" is a fine thing to say.
Actually, little that you may know, this is a perfect time to say, "Well, then I guess we should tear up the contract. Sorry to disappoint you." Then they'll be all apologetic. Really, they don't realise that they are opening a certain kind of window for you to be assertive and get what you're due. You have to be assertive with these people. Many people may argue, but they actually respect assertivness. They don't like it. And they may complain. But they respect it. |

princess, take the school to the labour board. The owner is just like Bulsajo-you have done absolutely nothing wrong, princess, you're just misunderstood, and you should not have to stand for that. |

| There are a million schools. Who cares if they don't want you? I am sure that you can find another school easily. Why bother fighting about it....if they don't want you then you don't want to work there. Bad feelings from the start are a sure way to get screwed. Just move on and stop worrying about it! |

Does "too busy" mean hungover?
Pull a George Costanza and just keep showing up until they give you a job.

My wife has been working around koreans for almost 2 years. She understands how they think and view foreigners. (More so than I do) You really need to impress a korean employer to gain their respect. When you have it...they will be very generous with you. Not meeting your boss was like a slap in the face to them. Not a very honorable thing to do. |

There's a lot to what you said.
They also respect you when you stand up to them. Thing is, however, you need a reason to stand up to them. Such things as doing a good job help on top of having something against them like the tax situation (which is really not a big deal in the long run as long as you're not paying too much).
I was at this one school, though, for less than a month. There was quite a bit of evidence that the previous teachers were putting a good effort towards teaching. The employer was let them go on the 11th hour and was screwing them out of their last and severence months pay. They had a ton of binders with research, etc. and the some of the kids were speaking some pretty good English. Hard to say where the good English came from though.
When you work here, you have to stand your ground from the beginning. |

The irony is you're asserting that their English is really bad when (in this case, anyway) yours doesn't appear to be too hot, either:

They're = They are
"they're English is really bad" = "they are English is really bad."
Get it? |
