I have a nice DVD burner. It's a Sony dual layer burner. For the first few months I had it, I had no complaints. It was easy to install and I was popping out CDs and DVDs every day. Now it seems to not be working correctly. The computer recognizes it, it shows up when I click on my computer. But it doesn't read or write anything. When I put in a CD that has data on it, it doesn't show up. When I try to burn a disc, it goes though the whole process and everything but at the end, there is no data on the disc. Anyone have any suggestions on what I should try? Thanks.

Try some other software.

It sounds like a hardware failure to me. I'd be taking it back.

The software is good I think, Nero. Like I said, when I try to burn a data, music, or movie CD/DVD, it goes through the whole process. I can here it making sounds like it it burning, but then at the end, there is nothing.

Sounds like the same thing that happened to mine. I have an LG Super multi. Was having problems and brought it in for repair after having it for about 14 months. The place supposedly fixed it. Reads both CDs and DVDs most of the time, but there is definitely still trouble with the writing. You could see if there are any new drivers out for your model, but I would go and see if you can get a replacement if it's still under warranty. If they'll only repair it, make sure you bring some blanks CDs and DVDs with you when they have it finished to test it yourself before taking it home. I'm going to bring mine in one more time to see what they can do. However, I'll probably have to buy a new one because I think I literally burned the *beep* out of it.

Damn, I really haven't used mine that much. I have had it for about 6 months, but haven't burned too many CDs. Yea, it's not reading or writing anymore.

These things have a high-failure rate. They work pretty hard if you think about it. All that burning and spinning at incredibly high speeds.

My guess.......It sounds like the laser has blown on yours but your computer doesn't know it has.

Also, Sony aren't what they used to be. Purely my opinion. I've been using an LG DVD-writer a lot for almost 2 years now and it's been fine. And it only cost 120,000.

Yea, maby so Eamo. It's a shame, it's not too old and haven't used it much. Maybe I will buy an LG or some other brand. At least they aren't too expensive. This one was about 90,000 when I bought it about 6 months ago.

Prices are coming down all the time. I just picked up a BenQ 1640 for 48,000 won. Good luck on your replacement drive.

If you dont use them, they do go faulty after a while. Dust, dirt etc. creeps in. Whether its just gunk on the laser or some mechanical issue.

So you need to use the drive regurlaly for it to stay working. Thats just my experiance...

I would say just get a LG DVD+-RW drive, they go for around W50,000.
