White Day, Black Day & Racism: Cultural Misunderstandings This is a great blog entry that I'm sure many will read and see themselves or someone they know reflected in the story.

Interesting.

If it were true, the Korean dude should be fired for incompetence. Sraight up.

Top level meetings shouldn't muff up so royally.

I agree about our mindsets. The same is true for people comming to the West from their little worlds.

That's a seriously good story.

I'd say the mistake is that this guy thought White Day and Black Day are international holidays. They do after all have English names, which are, of course, hilariously inappropriate.

Most Koreans don't realise that White Day is a Japanese holiday. Perhaps we should start a campaign to bring this to light.

So what's the deal with this White Day? Should I bring flowers/candy to the women/girls at my hagwon? Would that be appropriate/appreciated?

I didn't buy the story. Just 'too convenient' I guess.

My sentiments exactly. Reads like a poorly written joke.

This is true, however the aide eventually soon got his job back.

seems like the people in the room really over reacted. You think some of them would be askiing the guy what white and black day are.

Many of us live in small boxes of our own. We assume the rest of the world knows what we know. We wrongly believe life beyond our boundaries is just like it is in our home nations and it is impossible for some of us to comprehend otherwise.

We form a very conceited notion about ourselves, our culture and our countries and when we travel beyond our national country lines still carrying such a mindset, we are like time bombs waiting to explode.

Yeah, somehow I am not surprised this happened....

I could just as easily see a story about some American business executive who comes to Korea and started talking about a recent trip to Japan and how Japan invented ondol floors and ramen noodles... Not knowing Korea hates Japan and about how Koreans think Japan "stole" all of Korea's culture and ideas....

Anyway, black, white, and valentines day are just plain stupid holidays... there to make some money for chocolate companies... in Korea, the idea of making a holiday for candy companies' profits was taken a step further with that ridiculous "peppero day" deal... what's up with THAT????

That's three of us, then.

Americans aren't the most culturally-savvy folks on Planet Earth, but I've been in presentations like this, given by furriners. When the person says something like this (about White Day, Black Day, whatever), someone with a level head speaks up and says, "hold on a sec, what do you mean, 'white day?'" The presenter explains, everyone has a good laugh and onward goes the meeting.

My girlfriend flat out didn't believe it, but I'm a little less sceptical. It does sound more like an episode of The Office, but this is a pretty easy misconception to fall into, and I'm sure things like this happen quite often. Whether it happened exactly this way and this guy is retelling it exactly as it happened, well, he probably did polish it up a lot.

"peppero day" deal... what's up with THAT????

That, my friend, is one brilliant piece of marketing! I'm used to 11/11 being a solemn time to remember those who have died in armed conflict...and here it's all about bread sticks covered in chocolate because they look like "1"s.

...although, I've got to admit, I kinda like peperos. Not the day mind you, just the snacks...some of them anyway.
