In his Wu-Tang Manual, RZA sights Monk as a major influence: "Man... he just came out on stage, played one note, BOOP and he smoked a cigarette!"

Does anyone know which album it is that he improvised with upright bass/drums only accompaniment?

I was slightly disappointed with my recent purchase Brilliant Corners. I was expecting some 'wild-out sh*t' a la Straight, No Chaser only to encounter big-band stylee be-bop. I just cannot put up with alto sax.


ps. Is there an album of equivalent ingredients in Charles Mingus' discography?

I don't know much in the way of particulars about any jazz artists, but for some reason the name "Sun Ra and the Solar Arkestra" keeps popping up in mind (probably because when I visited a friend's house when I was in first grade - in Troy, N.Y. - his older brother had a Sun Ra album I was fascinated with...) If your looking for great Monk albums, Monk's Dream and Underground are two of his finest. It's not just Drum/Bass/Piano, it also includes Charlie Rouse on the tenor sax.

And for Mingus, the only album that I can think of that includes only Drum/Bass/piano is an album by Duke Ellington called Money Jungle...Max Roach completes the trio on the drums. It's a great album.
