A co-worker called the Canadian Consulate in Pusan and was told they cannot renew a passport there. I find that odd. I'm checking if anyone else knows about this. It will be a hassle to have to go to Seoul when Pusan is a good bit nearer.

I had one done there...at least at the old location. However, it's not machine readable. You're right about it being a pain to go to Seoul as I'll have to get another in a year or two. I applied here and it was done in Seoul. Must have sth to do with the War on Terror or sth.

The service at the Busan consulate sucks, not least of all because they often give out wrong or conflicting information.

My current passport is not machine readable, no problems thus far. It does expire in September though, and has no blank pages left in it.

I had to go to Seoul to renew mine, but I was able to pick it up at the Busan consulate, so it saved me from making 2 trips.

THEY DON'T RENEW PASSPORTS IN KOREA ANYMORE.

They take your application and forward everything to Canada. Your passport is made in Canada and forwarded back to the office in Korea. Then they give it back to you.

The new ones now are machine readable (have the bar code on the bottom of the information page).

This is a new thing.
Important Notice for Canadian Passport Applicants:

The correct question to ask the Busan office is: Can I apply for a passport at your office?

I can only suppose that not renewing them in Korea can only be a good thing - I had mine done last summer at the Seoul consulate and the staff were so disgustingly horrifyingly rude to me that I wrote a letter to my MP and the Passport Office in Ottwa -- of course, it didn't actually DO anything by writing these letters, except allow me the honour of receiving a "Thank you for writing with your complaint..."

But honestly, the staff there treated me like I was a piece of dirt off the street, the woman actually reprimanded me for having a full passport, demanding to know WHY my passport was full, 2 years before it expired....

They don't renew passports anywhere in country now- they have to be processed in Missassauga ( better the passport go there than me!) and then they send them back to you, according to the Canadian embassy site:
