| I did a 2 year on campus MA TESOL at San Jose State. It was under the Linguistics department and offerred both degrees. Were I to do it over again, I think I would choose the Linguistic's route. The programs had similar core classes and then went their separate ways. Neither had enough pedagogy, and in my opinion, the TESOL segment was weighted down with SLA theory. |

I know the Australian Masters TESL community well (I can't say why due to previously working somewhere). They are degree mills, nothing more. My opinion of them is horrid, and many employers (well the good ones) are quite iffy on them. The Linguistics ones are a bit better (and a bit more broad for usefulness) but for other people, be careful which school you do it at. Many unis there are again degree mills when it comes to these online Masters. They are cheap and accept anyone into the program. Just remember you get what you pay for.
(Just incase, I am not talking about Australian unis as a whole, just these two degrees). |

| I have an M.A. in TESOL. I chose it because I knew I wanted to teach English. Applied Linguistics, similar as it may be, sounded too general to me if I were to ever put it on a resume. I took a couple required linguistics courses, but the majority of the courses I took focused on CLT (Communicative Language Teaching). |

I agree - why do they even call these coursework programs "Master Degrees"?
They're more like 1 year certificate courses - that's exactly what they are.
They are nothing but 6 - 8 courses long and can be done in 8 months full time (February - October).
I think they're a total joke. |
