I like it when they come back. I heard a shout crossing the street and Leena (10) who quit a couple of months ago was shrieking my name because I was running across without a walk light. So I went and talked to her jaywalking again. She said she was going to 'Tomorrow' hagwon now. But a few days later she came back to ours so that felt good.

One time two teen girls quit, who were friends (so of course they had to quit together), and I thought it was the lousy textbook. It's true that foreigners CAN have good ideas but Koreans seem only to trust themselves. And sometimes select texts at a level which underestimates the English level of the kids. Or (conspiracy theory) they want the kids to NOT learn English and so keep them in the hagwon longer. Think about that one Shocked .

My impression is the hierarchy can be so uptight and ineffecient failures are just swept under the rug. Like there's no long term planning there's no remorse, either.

I never liked it when students would leave, but it never made me think about my teaching ability.

All you can do is try your best. Students come and go. Sometimes they leave because of you and sometimes they don't. You will never know the real reasons.

As long as you are trying to teach to the best of your ability and seek to develop yourself to improve your teaching, you have done your duty.
