I've been told that pepperspray/mace is illegal in Korea, but I can't verify that.

A friend of mine shipped back a couple of stunguns from Thailand on his last trip and handed them out to some friends. I will never forget the look on the US 66 staff's face when someone took one out to show it around...it was as if someone laid a Mossberg 12-gague on the bar.

I'm sure you could probably get something shipped to you from an online store.

Check a place called se-woon-sang-ga", its a market apparently near the river that runs past Dongde mun market. .

The product is a sleeping gas, from I hear some girls carry it with them for protection. The Korean name is ̡ pronounced Supuraye. Just bring the Korean writing and show someone.

I know this is a little vague, but its the best I can do for now.

Hope this helps

Good luck

Goodluck with customs... Confused

If you do order something electronic, and weapon-like online be sure to ask the seller to keep the labelled cost under 150$USD including the shipping, and say that it is a new and improved, one of a kind, genuine, American, ballpark style, individual, weiner roaster or something...

$125 USD is the cut-off point for duty-free mail order in Korea. Any amount exceeding that and you will have to pay duty. Not bad for a developing country. In Canada, you have to pay duty for anything over $15 CDN. To top it off, Canada Post tacks on another $5.00 (flat charge) for temporarily covering your custom duty fees for you - another reason why I hate my home country.

I mailed a letter to the U.S. yesterday via air mail. Cost me 580 won.
To send a letter to Korea from Canada is $1.49 +.22 tax = $1.71 CDN or 1,440 won. The post office corporation in Canada must be among the worst in the industrialized countries. Korea is pretty good in this area.

Sending from Korea to Canada is the same 580 won.

But I totally agree that Canada post robs its patrons blind!

If you think you need pepperspray while you are in Korea Twisted Evil Very Happy simply get a foil bag full of kimchi and when you need the pepperspray simple poke a hole in the bag and spray the juice into the eyes of the attacker Laughing problem solved!...Gochu-jang flinging could also work!

I believe it's illegal and if you're a guy and you think you need it here you're one hell of a wimp.

Hehe...yeah. My friend wanted to mace a puppy farm owner (who doesn't?), re-label the pepperspray to "Floral Room Deodorizer" and leave it for a gift in his hakwon (pretty rich idea) and finally, he wanted to tazer himself, just to know how it feels.

Questionable activities, but far from wimpy.

Jeebus, this is the safest country of the 25-odd that I have visited/lived in. Why would you want to go importing that stuff here? Planning to go burn the stars and stripes in Songtan?

Lots of Korean websites sell tazers. I've seen them advertized in the papers, too. My wife tells me it's all legal.

You're a man, and from I understand, a rather large one, at that.

If you were a woman, and you had read this (the "sexual assualts haunt nation" thread), then you might want pepperspray or mace, too.

Please think things through more carefully before you post next time.

Nice you know my vital stats. The OP made no mention about the purpose for which s/he wanted it. And while I concede that sexual assualts are commonplace here, if the item is illeagal, its not very clever asking about it on a forum like this. Moreover, such a weapon could be used against someone if they are not familiar with its use. Rather than listen to your condescending banter, I would urge the OP to think through the pros and cons of carrying such a weapon.

In your first post, you were the one who was condescending.
You implied that the Original Poster was either:
a. some kind of "wimp" who was unable to defend himself, or
b. wanting to use it only for the purposes of causing mischief.

Now you're back-pedalling and trying to claim that, no, you weren't making witty put-downs. You were, in fact, concerned about the legality of it all, etc.

Your second post, however, was quite good. If you had put the same amount of thought into your first post, we wouldn't have had this argument.
