I feel like a newb here, coming up for 3 years this year, with about 3 months spent outside of Korea in that time. Probably be here for another 2 or so.

For those of you who have been here 5+ years, what's your level of Korean proficiency? Are you fluent? How did you learn the language? Formal classroom setting? Korean friends/significant others? How long did it take you to get to the level of fluency that you wanted?

My Korean proficiency is pathetic considering how long I've been in the country. A number of things got in the way. Initially time but no money then money but no time, then 3 years of grad school, now 2 kids. But I'm working on it, I just finished 10 weeks at Sogang and continue to put some time in every week. I'll be taking another semester at sogang come winter.

I can understand a lot, but cannot contribute to the conversation in a significant manner. Basically I suck.

I arrived March 12 or 13, 1994. Since then, I've been out for two periods, 9 months and 8 months.

3.5 years.

Level of Korean proficiency: could be a lot better. Still fairly basic.

If I tell a Korean I've been here 1 year they say wow, your korean is amazing. If I say 3 years, they seem to wonder why it isn't better.

I began my first Korean EFL gig in March, 2002, and I've been away a few months... At first, I was making pretty good progress learning Korean, but then I stopped going to these free Saturday classes - after I moved farther from Seoul (and they started giving too much homework...)

I often lie about how long I've been here too.

Then again, how many Koreans are embarrassed about the time they have spent trying to learn English, versus their actual ability to communicate in the language?

Just about 5 years total, but spanning about 12 or 13 years. It's interesting in that when you leave for a long time and come back, the changes are more noticeable than if you stayed on straight through. This is not the same place I came to so very long ago.

Got to Korea in 95. Told everyone 'See ya next year'. That didn't happen.

But now I'm in exile in Canadia. Been 5 months away. Holy crap batman! WTF where is my new visa????? I wanna go home!

For those who've asked about what keeps us in Korea, for me it's the utter chaos. My sick and twisted desire for new challenges and experiences. I feel like I'm in hibernation over here in the hibernation nation.

Gimme back my soju!
