7 years is an extremely harsh ban. Most other countries give less for over-stay offences. |

You're right. There should simply be a "fine and forget it". It's ridiculous.
To the OP. Good luck to you. If I really wanted to go back just to test the waters, maybe I'd take a short vacation back to Korea, but it's a risk. However, you can't do much from Japan. Hope you are happy there meantime. |

I guess it's a clue: don't mess with Immigration.
How would you feel about an Immigrant at home who just chose to disregard the law to make a few dollars on the side?
You'd throw the book at him. |

Just curious. The OP says:
1. Banned from teaching in Korea for seven years
2. Banned from working in Korea for seven years
3. Banned from Korea for seven years
Which is it? |

The op's. experience highlights the dangers of overstaying or residing beyond the expiration date on one's residency card.
To think, previous threads about how long anyone can stay after expiration of visa, had self-proclaimed "knowledgeable" posters recommending all types of fubar wive's-tales. |

numbers are mine
1. Why? It's their country and they can do what they want. They have a big problem with people overstaying their visa and thus want to impose harsh rules. They can't make exceptions because then everybody would want one.
2. To the OP. Call Immigration and find out. |

Since generally (although not always) teaching=working for most Westerners posting here, 1 and 2 are the same. I doubt it's 3 though, they can always come back as a tourist. I've heard of people who got banned from teaching in Korea who then came back on a tourist visa and taught illegally. |

I cannot work in any capacity in Korea for 7 years, according to the guy my attempted boss talked to. I cannot be issued an e-2 visa, thus cannot work.
I should have gotten the stamp from my previous school, if I had I would have been fine. I guess I was just too eager to leave my school and was worried the job wouldn`t stay open. My mistake, rest assured that won`t happen again.
I am hoping that the 7 years thing was a miscommunication on their part, because it sounded too harsh. A friend said that I would be able to work in a year if I wanted. Just wondered if anyone else had a similar experience and if they could clarify.
Again, for all readers, PLEASE make sure to abide my the dates on the card. I would hate for this to happen to someone esle. |

Your best odds are 50 - 50 that what Immigration tells you is true, especially about a blacklisting issue. I have never heard 7 years, but I have heard 5 years. |
50/50 on what immi tells you, yes. This is all what the boss told him. It sounds to me that he still hasn't gotten this info from immi themselves. There's more like a 90% chance that the boss is full of it for whatever reason. Maybe he wasn't impressed with you and is doing the blacklisting himself by yanking your chain. That's my guess. |
