What constitutes being the best? Is it sales, gallery representation, critical reviews or public endorsement?
I never post here, but I had to jump in on this one as I'm an artist myself. Please enlighten me as to why you forecast yourself as the best expat artist? Artistically, what are you doing IN KOREA? I've only seen pics of old paintings. What have you accomplished here that gives you this sense that you are "king pusher-of-paint"?
Okay, I'm finished and heading back to my studio, never to post again(well, maybe one more time in four or five years). Seriously, don't waste your time here and get to bettering your painting skills, RTeacher. EVERYONE will thank you! |

What makes an artist "the best"? (Of course, God is the best artist, but He doesn't qualify as an expat in Korea...)
In the spirit of playful competition (along with shameless self-promotion...) I posted some of my stuff and challenged any other expat artists/jokers to also post their stuff on this thread - and each viewer can judge for her/himself as to who's "the best" (by whatever subjective criteria each beholder chooses to apply...)
I have a lot of smaller pieces that I've done in Korea (many of which I brought back to the U.S. when I last visited...) but I've been too lazy to photograph them (and if I did this dang thread would probably never end...)
It's not surprising that real artists - being "sensitive" types - would be reluctant to post their work here because it could mean being ridiculed by some of the world's most talented insult artists. (It's a tough crowd for any kind of "entertainment" post - kinda like doing stand-up comedy at the Apollo Theater...)
Anyway (before posting another oldie-or-two...) I think I have shown that I'm clearly willing and able to take - and dish out - clever insults, and that gives me a decided advantage over any would-be challengers out there (that plus the fact that I might be crazy...  )

If I were in Haiti looking for some primitive stuff sold by the yard in street markets, I might consider a piece of something like yours (fairly similar, really).
I'm no art critic, but your stuff is a bit rough and naive. But I bet the kids in the hogwon love it. |

I have seen what passes at art at Florida art shows- even the "juried" ones. I am sure, rteacher, that you have been to the Coconut Grove Art Festival. What is juried and accepted there is a joke. The "art" there is purchased if it meets two criteria- first, it is "real" and not a print, and, second, it matches the couch.
Even Art Basel-Miami, the premier show in Florida, has a large share of crap.
But then, we should have realized your own standards for excellent (dare I say, the best?) art with the quote you employed in your second post:
"Art is just fraud. You just have to do something nobody else has done before"
You may have succeeded at the first, but not the second part of this criteria. What you are doing is also derivitive.
Not that I could do better- I am no painter. And I am an appreciator of naive art.
Have fun painting- it is the process, not the product, right? If you are enjoying it, and it brings pleasure to anyone else, cool. But to claim yourself the greatest, unless it is in your hogwan, is just too arrogant, and basically incorrect. |

Yeah, but your grandson is probably a lot older than me... 
Regarding the Coconut Grove art show, I had a friend who (not actually being part of the show...) just set up a couple easels adjacent to official exhibitors and hauled in a few thousand dollars selling assembly-line-made Korean "originals" (That St. Stephens church also capitalizes on being situated right near it by holding their own pretentious art show at the same time...) Of course, some food venders are the ones who really make the big bucks (  Cubic/Cuban veggie-burger on impressionistic whole-grain bun concession... ) Er - I guess I'd better get back to the drawing board... |

To further solidify my (outrageous?) claim of being the best expat artist in Korea (or the whole universe... ) I'll go ahead and post photos of a few small-to-medium size works I've done in Korea - and a black-lit photo of "Smiling Cat Goddess" (which has a lot of invisible flourescent paint within it...)
