Here is a contract that should meet all the expectations of some of us on here..... it was sent to me via email by a buddy who works at a school in Seoul and who got tired of teachers with no qualifications asking for the moon...he sent this back to a few of the more idiotic applicants and 3 of them replied they accepted the offer!

This EMPLOYMENT AGREEMENT has been made on this day for the sole benefit of _______________ (name of teacher). This agreement binds the ____________(Institute) but does not really bind ___________ (teacher). This contract recognizes that ___________ (teacher) is a superior being held to no responsabilities towards the humble natives of Korea. The Employer is hereby honoured to have the privilege of employing ______________ (teacher) according to the following terms and conditions:

I. Period of Employment

A. The total agreement term is for one year (12 months) but this does not bind the employee in any way, shape or form.
B. The term of this Agreement includes an adaptation period where the employee will be sent to a resort for 2 weeks while being paid at double his pay rate. The Employer apologizes that he cannot pay more for the privilege of allowing the teacher to adapt to such a lowly land.
C. The employee can, at any time change these conditions to his benefit. Afterall he is a superior being.

II. Conditions of Employment

1. Duties:

1.1 The employee may teach at his convenience and will be paid under any circumstances.

2. Working hours

2.1. Theoretically classes will be held from Monday to Friday, from 1pm to 7pm. However, if the employee is too tired to teach, the students will simply wait for him to grace them with his divine presence.
2.2. The employee can of course work only when he pleases.
2.3. The employee is not required to prepare his classes since he is the source of all knowledge.

3. Salary and Overtime

3.1. The employee shall be paid a salary of 25 million won (or more if he asks) per month for as little work as he pleases.
3.2. Only work beyond 20 minutes a week will be considered ovetime and be compensated at 5 times the normal rate.
3.3. The salary will be paid on the 15th day of each teaching month or whenever the employee wants it.

4. Severance Pay

Upon successful or unsuccess full completion of a full contract period (12 months), or when the employee asks for it he will be given a severance package equal to whatever amount he thinks is fit.

5. Benefits

5.1. Housing

The Employer will select and provide free furnished mansion for the employee. This mansion will include a maid, a cook (specialized in any cuisine desired) and a limo service to and from the school. The mansion will be fuly furnished but if the employee does not like the furniture, new furniture will be bought for him.

5.2. Vacation, Holidays and Emergency Leave

The employee will have as much vacation as he pleases and can take his vacation whenever he wishes, irrespective of school needs.

The school kindly begs that the teacher work at least 3 weeks during the year but cannot require this of such a superior being.

5.3. Health Insurance

The school will cover all medical costs for the employee. If the employee cannot tolerate being treated by local medical staff, the school will of course fly in a physician of his choosing upon request.

5.4. Transportation

Such a superior being does not need a visa. The mere fact he exists is enough information for the government of Korea.

III. Taxes and Other Deductions

IV. Conduct and Dress Code

This area is completely at the discretion of the teacher.

VI. Outside Employment and Conflicts of Interest

The teacher shall not be bound to any of the local labour laws and may work anywhere for any amount he wishes.
This can be at the expense of his school hours and students. What matters is his bank balance.

I started out reading this in full sympathy with the employer.

But I soon got pissed and saw the bad attitude of the culture of Korean hagwon owners showing through!

I have really enjoyed my time here but that so-called funny contract is actually PATHETIC if you read it in the context of the superior attitude of employERS and the failures of employERS to fulfill contracted conditions.

Utterly pathetic. And I am NOT speaking of my own situation.

Van...this was not written by a Korean employer...it was written by a foreign teacher in charge of hiring new teachers for his school...he is as western as they come....the employer had no hand in this.

I will ask him for a sample of the applications he received and which led him to send this joke contract out...

Mr. Homer,

Do you know if your friend has any openings at his school? While this contract isn't perfect, it looks like a pretty good deal to me and I think I can negotiate the necessary improvements.

Thanks ahead of time for any help.

Sincerely,
Ya-ta Boy

Dear Homer,

I know you are a newbie, but the contract you posted really leaves much to be desired.

There are no penalty clauses in case the employer fails to keep his end of the bargain. He should be hung, drawn and quartered, at the very least, if he breaks the contract.

Keep looking around. You can do better. Wink
