I dont know if this post is too late to help you. If you fly into Bangkok, it is best to catch another flight into Siem Riep. The road from Bangkok to the boarder isnt bad, but the bus from the boarder to Siem Riep is hell. You can hire a tax at the boarder to take you to Siem Riep, but still takes between 4-7 hours.
If you fly into Phenom Phen, you can take a boat up the Mekong to Siem Riep. It is shorter than the bus ride from Bangkok and I hear it is a nice trip (didnt try it myself).
The later afternoon before you plan to explore the temples is the best time to go buy you ticket. They start selling tickets at 4:45, I think, that allows you to go in and watch the sunset for free, then come back again the next day.
If you hire a driver and head out at sunrise, one day is enough to see all the major sites and even the sites that are further afield. It is worth it to go to some of the further sites because the drive out to them is great.
When you go out the night before to get your ticket and watch the sunset, you can pick up a guide book from any of the hundreds of kids that are begging you to buy one from them. Flip through then and pick one you like. That gives you the evening to plan your route for the next day.
It is a great country to visit and the temples are amazing. Enjoy your trip. |

You can fly (expensive) t o/ from Siem Riep and Phnom Penh
You can take the boat (I think $25) but I was told by a westerner who had just done this that he'd never do it again - it's a long , noisy trip and the river is so broad you rarely see the shore
After his advice, we took the bus - $14 as I recall - included a packed tasty breakfast, smooth ride, "hostesses" just like stewardesses on airplanes - and a stunning view of countryside, including old Cambodian farming villages - seeing people in traditional costume, etc. |

I also got a great tuk tuk driver during my stay. His name is Mr. Ou Hok, he was sooo great. A very kind man, took me anywhere I wanted to go. He was great company too. So if anyone is is planning a trip there in the future I would definately recommend him. If interested pm me...his email address is : [email protected] |
