If I get canned mid-contract does the director have to sign a Letter of Release, or can he still choose to be an awkward ****?
I'm in a non-too happy situation with my location, my hagwon and the tiny apartment they've given me. I'm more than happy to pay back the airfare just as long as I can ditch this hell-hole and move onto something better.
I don't want to quit because this only decreases my chances of obtaining that LOR, but the way things are going at work I might not have to.... |

| Getting fired relieves you of the need for the LOR, but getting to that point could be unpleasant until the ax falls. Is there anyone at work you can talk to...as in, act as a go-between who can say, "cj is unhappy, you (boss) are unhappy. Maybe it's time to reach a mutually beneficial arrangement and let him go quietly"? |

If he wants to fire you he should have to go to immigration with an LOR and cancel your visa, though he may try to fire you and screw you too by trying just to let you go and stop paying you.
If they're not happy with you, either, you could try negotiating a way out - say you'll be happy to go so long as they cancel your visa and provide an LOR. |

| To be honest, I'm not sure I can trust anyone at the hagwon. I'm the only foreigner there and I don't really speak to anyone due to the language barrier. However, I have talked to the recruiter who sent me here in the first place, so hopefully they'll do the talking for me... |

| I forgot to mention that I've been here less than 3 months (I started early January), so the title of the post is technically invalid. I've been informed that teachers who leave their jobs less than 3 months after they start tend to arouse suspicion from immigration. Is this true, or has someone merely tried to put me off the idea of quitting? |

I can't know from your post if this is relevant or not...but the 3 month point is sometimes called 'the Wall', meaning culture shock sets in and is a particularly hard time for newbies to work their way through.
Do you find yourself getting stressed out and over-reacting to relatively small things, things that didn't really bother you much in the first weeks here? |

No, I'm a fairly level headed type of guy and I don't let things get to me that easily. Outside of the job situation, things have actually been very good. My Korean is improving, I'm meeting some interesting people, talking to some nice girls etc. I'm more active and healthy than i've been for a long time, my diet has improved. So far, there is nothing I miss about my native land except for some friends and family. I'm here to stay for a couple of years at least.
The only problems I have are the fact I'm in a tiny one-horse town with nothing to do and I work for a slimy hagwon director. |

| That happened to me when I first got here. Got Fired after 3 months. The recruiter was partly to blame since he did not relay some things the school wanted from me. It was probably the best thing that happened to me. The schedule there was horrible. I barely had 5 minutes to eat dinner. They did give me the LOR and i had a better job within 14 days. Maybe you can download a copy of the LOR on this site..both in English and Korean and give it to the school. They should know how it works. |

Not neccessarily.
If your boss doesn't cancel your visa with immigration you still need that Letter of Release. This effectively stops you from working in Korea legally until your visa expires. Some hagwon owners do this just to be complete pr*cks to the teacher, especially if it's the teacher that quits.
On the other hand, if you go to immigration and they're in a good mood, they have been known to cancel the visa for the teacher but they rarely do this. Usually, it's the hagwon owner or director who has to cancel the visa or alternatively, give the teacher a Letter of Release. |
