I decided to see what people were talking about on the other international job boards on Dave's (South East Asia, the Middle East, etc.), and there's just not a lot going on. Threads receive little response, and they are almost all job-related. I wonder why. I'm thinking it's due to numbers- there are many ESL teachers in Korea, so we have our own forums. There seem to be a lot of teachers in Japan and China, though, but those boards aren't as active.
Have you guys read any interesting stories or threads on the other boards? The only one I found that was remotely intersting was from a woman in China. She went to China w/her husband, and she's worried about the future of her marriage due to all the attention her husband receives from the Chinese girls. That thread would've probably spawned a good couple of pages over here, but her thread only had 7 or so responses. |

Ya, I've wondered the same thing. Then again, maybe many people find their jobs in Korea from here and hence look into the forums. I know both my former employers (in Japan and China) said they don't like to post their jobs here because they are bombarded by hundreds of the most useless people possible's applications. On other job sites, there is a much higher ratio of actual employable people to idiots who apply. And since other people look on other sites for Japan and China, they never really get into the forums here.
Just a thought. |

From my general browsing it seems like its more than just the other ESL boards which are quiet... every other Korean ESL board I've come across, even those with ties to the big sites have been terribly outdated and inactive... |

I tried registering for the Japan forum when I was changing jobs and thinking of other options and got no reply. Perhaps they're just not on the ball when it comes to taking new members.
Or it could just be that this board has so many interesting people it draws bored ex-pats like a magnet. |

Personally, I prefer to think it is because I am here and not there. |

Kinda makes you think that Dave's is benefiting from the traffic here.
And, kinda makes you think that Dave doesn't know he has a good thing that makes him revenue from the benefit of the many people going to his forums. If so, why don't he find a solution to the php Critical Error sheit, is my question.
For one, I have wandered around to other forums when lag was really bad last week. |

I'm guessing it's due to the large amount of whiners that come to Korea... |

Far too many teachers presently and formerly in Korea love to whine and complain about Korea, Koreans and all things Korean and post repetitive threads dealing with the same topics week after week, month after month, year after year.
Teachers in other nations appear to be less obsessed in this respect and more inclined to use the boards for information purposes and not primarily for venting. |

Korea can't be the worst country to teach in- there are so many of us here, and if were that bad, the numbers would be far less than what they presently are. I've heard about some crazy stuff in China that would cause quite a bit of whining, but that board is slow in comparison to the Korean board. |

Never said Korea was the worst county to teach in. Those are your words, not mine. As for why there are so many teachers here, money has a lot to do with it. The China O/T board is relatively new compared to the Korean board. It also does not have the number of whiners that one runs into here. If it did, you would find the whining and complaining like you find here and so it would appear to be less "dead" than you seem to think it is. Whatever the case, it appears to be growing very fast. As is just about everything else in China. |

That's because the Center of the Universe is located in Korea, and several of the posters here believe themselves to be that center.
IMHO it's just that Korea is so whacky that it whackifies everyone here and we just gotta share! |

I never said that you said that Korea was the worst country to teach in. I meant to respond that one could infer that Korea is not a good country to teach in if you compared some of the posts on this forum to posts on other boards. You could also infer that Korea is a good place to teach, judging from the numbers of teachers that are here, etc., etc. Basically, you could infer a lot of things about Korea and teaching in Korea just by reading this board. However, you can't garner much about other countries or the teaching experience of others on the other boards, as there just isn't much info. being shared.
In response to the comment that I emboldened in the above post, I still stand by my comments. There isn't much activity. As for the money comment, I wasn't asking why more people come to Korea to teach. Again, I was wondering why more teachers frequent this board in comparison to ESL teachers in other countries that don't frequent Dave's. |

Whackifies is not a word. But it should be! |
