I was listening to season one of the Ricky Gervais podcast and Karl Pilkington mentioned something about a belief in the UK a decade or two ago that some painting of a boy in blue was causing house fires. Basically someone had noticed that all these homes that burned down had one thing in common: a little painting of a boy in some blue clothes. Ipso facto, the painting was causing the fire!

Of course, this is highly similar to the notion of fan death. Someone dies who on first blush shouldn't have died (eg a middle aged man). A running fan is in the room. So, the fan must have caused his death.

Anyway, any of our British teachers know what they were talking about exactly on the Gervais podcast?

This scares the hell out of me. This is my phobia. This and mirrors. All the hair on my body stood up whan I read your post.

Can you link to an image of this painting?

The current one kinda looks like the Bird Lady from Kids In The Hall.

I think the picture might be the "The death of Chatterton" by Henry Wallis.

Or it could be the Blue Boy.

Holy *beep*, guy, give it a rest.
What are you, the 'fine taste in woman' police?
The avatar constabulary?
Why do you care what somebody uses as an avatar as long as it's not offensive?

[please tell me MMT's avatars offend you because I've got a comeback line I'm dying to use...]
