Aloha,

Need some help out there, gang.

I'm an American citizen married to a Chinese (re: PRC) national who has been offered gainful employment at a university in Korea.

Anyone happen to know whether she's eligible to enter with me and, if not, whether the Boys in the Public Security Bureau back in Beijing can extend to her a visa for temporary residence in Korea?

I've got a hunch that the ONLY way she can accompany me and stay for the duration of my contract is if the university sends her a (bogus) letter of invitation to work there too. Is that about right?

I've had Danno working on this case for some time but no luck. Any leads, please post them here or at the Iolani. Mahalo.

Have you been told specifically that she can't come in on a spouse visa?

Ya-ta Boy:

No, haven't been told that because I never asked. I'm familiar only with spouse visas only to U.S. for immigration purposes and I sure ain't looking to immigrate to Korea, just work there a while.

Any lead on this will be much appreciated, bruddah.

Jenny, file this with "local contacts."

Who has gainful employment, you or the wife?

You should not have any problem bringing her here with a spouse visa.. I know a few people who have done that....

If she has employment, then she can come here on a work visa, no?

tzechuk: Maybe you can specify which spouse visa you're referring to and from whom I would need to obtain it. And just to clarify: she holds a PRC passport because she's still a Chinese citizen.

Actually, she wouldn't be employed by them; that would just be a ruse. I'm the one with the job offer from a Korean university.

Thanks.

Get on the phone, call the Korean consulate and ask if your wife can come on a spouse visa. Give them the details.

You have a marriage certificate, right?

That's enough to get you a spouse visa.

tzechuk & ya-ta boy:

O.K. So I call a Korean consulate about a spouse visa. Since I'm in China I assume you mean one here or perhaps it doesn't matter.

Yes, we're legally married, registered with her hukou and all.

So are you guys saying that IN ADDITION to an employment visa for myself I should be inquiring about a spouse visa for her as a separate entry document. Not familiar (obviously) with Korean visas.
