The problem is that tipping in America is actually optional. But it has been so ingrained that most people think its mandatory, especially the servers.
I don't like tipping, but it is a way to redistribute the wealth. Tipping creates plentiful living wage jobs for the uneducated. |

Perhaps mildly related.. when I worked the zoo consession stand at age 15, in addition to our other antics,
I put up a 'tip' jar, and kept it fairly full, including 20s. Many got a kick out of it,
more were shocked and realized we were already highway robbers,
but enough others said, "You got quijones." And gave tips! It was worth it, legal or not.
My first week in Korea, I went to an empty quiet place with beer.
I sipped a $5.00 bottle of Cass and re-read the only English newspaper I'd seen here.
(Only English anything except for the Cherry Coke misspelled on their menu.)
I left the girl a tip by habit. She chased me down the street to give it back.
Ah, to be innocent again. |

gee...how, um, generous of you.
I couldn't even begin to count the number of Phd / Phd student bartenders and waiters that I know. |

also bars in ITAEWON like seoulpub etc.. mr jung takes a share of the tips and still only pays his workers 2500-3000 an hour! becuase that bar makes so much tips! and his workers are koreans! he feels like well if you worked in kangnam or anywhere else you wouldnt expect tips! this is my bar so the tips are mine!!
so I NEVER TIP THERE!! |
Me, neither. Well, I never tip in any bar, though. I didn't know about all of this mysterious, shady business going on behind the scenes there, but if I want to tip someone, I buy them a drink instead. |
