I know somebody (Wrench?) has briefely mentioned it in a post a while back, but I thought it deserves a thread.

I don't play multiplayer, so a good solo campaign is important to me. I've played the last 3 Quake games and didn't have high hopes for this one.

BUT-
it's surprisingly good!
At least as far as the single player campaign goes.
It can be somewhat repetitive but the creepiness factor keeps it from getting stale.

Anyone play the multiplayer?
I heard that it's somewhat lacking when it comes to online multiplay?

Jesus. Pictures like that make me think I'm missing out on a lot. I used to review computer games for a newspaper. What started as a dream job (free computer games! basically anything I wanted, I just had to ask the company and they'd ship me a game, and all kinds of wacky freebies for reviewers...) became onerous. It's the classic case of the chocolate lover getting a job in a chocolate factory. I stopped playing computer games for about 10 years. (Basically Doom 2 was the last computer game I played.) I picked up the Age of Empires II bug when I returned to Canada after I noticed my 60 year old mother was playing the game (she'd play it with my nephew over her home LAN ... she's one hella cool grandma, considering when she first got wired she would print off web pages and snail mail them to me...).

Anyway, when I see pictures like that I liken it to a man who can't get it up and has lost all sexual desire looking at pictures of naked women. It's like "I know intellectually that a picture like that used to give me a lot of pleasure but viscerally I just don't feel anything. I want that pleasure back in my life but I don't have the biological/chemical need to really motivate me to find it."

Those are in-game screen shots- it's one great looking game. There are morbid and grotesque body parts and biological machines everywhere, it's one hell of a creepy game at times... you get captured and watch your legs get sawn off at one point.

I thought the FEAR environment was great, great graphics, but to be honest I'm enjoying Quake4 more.
It has the 'overall package' I want in a game. Plus it's longer and more varied.

I own, have played and beaten F.E.A.R. - Great game.
I own, am playing and about to beat Quake 4 - Great game
I own, will play soon, Silent Hill 4 - will let you know.

Multi-Fear: 7/10
Multi-Quake: 4/10

You have to practically be a pro in Quake to handle the online competition. I played for about a week (2 hours a day) and got decent enough to hold my own. It's frustrating at first though; you are getting whacked right when you spawn.

Q3A multi-player is great. Q4 multi is kind of...well.....boring. I don't know why exactly, but it just doesn't thrill me.

The Q4 solo game was really cool...better than FEAR IMHO. Fear got stale...it was fun for about 2/3 of the game...there didn't seem to be a driving reason to finish it.

Anyhow...Q4 is a good game for sure. Looks, sound, music, gameplay...lots of fun...beat it twice now.
