Yeah, I like working with adults sometimes, for ease of conversation but don't like teaching adults in another way. You'll get, "Oh, I'm busy, can we arrange for tomorrow night..?"
Even though, I have a rule: If you cancel, I still get paid. If I cancel, I don't get paid. That's fair. They always go for that, too. But, postponing? That's too airy fairy, eh.
I'd never accept payment in lieu. That's not appreciated nor realistic considering this is a job.
But, teaching kids I enjoy. I enjoy it because from month to month you can check and observe their development.
You will always have your lesson unless the family is away on vacation. Hence you'll always get your pay. |

How to make 5 million per month working at a hogwan plus privates:
Find a hogwan job from 2pm to 7 pm. 25 hours. 1.8 million. (You can do that.)
Now you need 3.2 million in privates. 110 hours at 30,000.
Private schedule: M - F : 15 hours/week 60 hours/month
7:30 pm - 8:30 pm
9:00 pm - 10:00 pm
10:30 pm - 11:30 pm
weekends: Sat 6 hours / Sun 7 hours : 13 hours/week 52 hours/month
5,000,000 per month easy. If you can charge more, you can make more.
Your next of kin should be very happy. |
That is a terrible schedule. And 30,000? Who would do that? Charge 45 or 50 thousand per person. Best way to do it is to get a high paying job over 2.5. Now you need 2.5 million a month extra.
Do a group class. Lets say 4 students, charge 30,000 an hour per student. Thats 120,000 an hour right there.
M,W,F comes out to about 360,000 a week if you do an hour with them. It comes out to 540,000 if you do 1.5 hours. So lets be optimistic. 540,000 a week is 2.16 million a month. Basically it gets you up to almost 5 million if you count that with your high paying job.
Then why not do a 1:1 class on T and F? An hour a day at 40,000 comes out to 80,000 a week, which is about 320,000 a month. Or, do 1.5 hours at that rate, thats 120,000 a week or almost 500,000 a month.
So what do we get?
1. Day job: 2.5 M,T,W,Th,F (9-5pm)
2. Small group private M,W,F 5:30pm-7pm. 4 people at 30,000/person/hour. 2.1 million
3. 1:1 private 5:30pm-7pm 500,000.
Total: 5.1 million.
if your day job is a public school you have 4 hours down time to prepare, relax, rest up.
Weekends are free unless you REALLY wanna make a killing and do several hours in the mornings. Then you can be up in the 6 million PLUS range.
If you have a hagwon job, then it gets more difficult as you have to do more hours and your evenings are gone. |

Jinju: how does one go about getting group classes? Where would one hold them? |
Group classes? Meet people, ask them if their coworkers want to join for a discount? I dont know, Im still working on that one though. But I think a good way is to get a 1:1 private in a company and go teach there. If you are good, word of mouth will get around and you can set up other classes. It would probably be best to do it at the company in someone's office. That way you do your 1:1 then do a group class at he same location. No need for commuting. And if you are even luckier you get your 1:1 student into the class and crank up the earnings and work less hours. Im still working on the group thing, but Im hoping my 1:1 spreads the word in her company.
I hope you are legally doing this as word of mouth might be a bad thing if you are on an E2..who knows who is listening, right? |

BOO-YAH!
However, does anyone but myself think that this number was probably inflated in order to
a) sensationalize the story?
b) create a larger amount of animosity regarding pay toward foreign teachers?
c) make the crime seem more vulgar than it really is? |
You think? He earned 150 million won (according to their estimate) in 4 years. If he was here for 48 months, he's earned roughly 3 to 4 million per month. The 10 million won months must have been far and between. |

Yeah, it's bull in terms of it being an ongoing continuous activity.
I have heard about SAT swat kyopos (foreigners by obscure definition)getting 10 million a month. But it only lasted one month. So, what about the rest of the year...?
In many cases it's better to continue in work constantly putting away 1 million than going all out (If you can get such a job in the first place) 3 months of the year putting away 5 million. Yep, that's 3 million more you say? But, forgetting severence, airfare, compound interest ... also the bank won't give you a housing loan based on temporary work. With things like that against it it could work out about the same if not worse.
Look, let's face it, these extreme teaching jobs are nearly impossible to arrange anyway.

Yeah, they arent easy to do. I think 5 million is an unreasonable number to shoot for. Between 3 and 4 million is not unreasonable. All you need is to do about 5 - 10 hours of privates a week on top of your regular job. Just be consistent instead of shooting for the high numbers. Its better in the long run. |

That is an issue for most, not all. More than that, its less stress and more time off. Id rather make 3.5 a month doing a bit extra and having weekends and evenings for myself and my wife, than make 8 million and be working 7 days a week, morning to night. |

A friend of mine told me that his Korean brother-in-law was making 17 million won a month teaching math at one of those upscale cram schools. He was getting a percentage of the tuition (something like 100000 won per student). Whenever the foreign teachers would ask why they weren't being paid in the same manner, the boss would say it's because they can't speak Korean. Some of the more naive ones started taking Korean lessons. |

Charge 45 or 50 thousand per person. |
this is VERY rarely possible!
I mean the people in the group wouldnt go for it!
they have to pay the same money in a group as 1:1
every student will take the one to one! leaving you stuck at 50! which is not bad anyway!
once you start charging 30-40 per student! you got 3 or 4 adults!
thats 120 an hour! the classes will be over fastest than it began!
people are not stupid! they know what is worth and what is not!
and they know how much money you are making! they will not like it..
4 guys paying 50 each for 1 hour with a native 200.000 an HOUR!!
no way!!... max you can get out of a class is about 70-80 and thats usually a group of 7-10 students! thats 10.000 each..
in theory your idea sounds great.. in reality would never get it to stick..
Another way to make 5 million is do what I use to do..
kindy -make 100.000 before 2pm.. dont care how much you charge or how many hours you work just make 100.000 before 1pm!
thats 2 million a month there..
then hakwon job mon-wed-fri get at least 4 hours there at 30 or 35 an hour thats 1 or 1.2 roughly a month..
so you work 3-7 pm you do a private after that at 50! 3 x a week
thats 600 there.. you are home by 9..
now you are on 3.8
tuesday AND Thursday you do only privates
have three a day at an average of 40 thats roughly 1.2 a month
you are at 5million...
and not even touching weekends I use to work sat and sun so I was 6.5 for a year but that got boring!! and I had no life! so I stopped..
and then spent that sunday intake on a first class holiday which only lasted a 2 months hahahaha still work 10 for 2 not bad!!
you should be able to make 5million on roughly 35hours a week.
I was doing it on 32 I think..
of course its hard for the classes to stay! of course there are other ways to make money! like JINJU said in some cases that works to a point!
you still need to get out there! you need to hop a leg! staying in bed gets you nothing! many teachers dont want to work that hard! its a lot of running around! and you need connections! not easy to get all the jobs!
I was lucky at times! other times I wasnt.. |

You guys are Soooooooo fixated on money!!! And so am I.
But i think teaching for cash is too hard. Seems like quite the grind to make 5+ mil a month. I preferother things.
But I have a question which all you undercover $$$ officianados might be able to answer. Where can I launder all my illegally earned dollars? ???? Any suggestions on making the cash legit???

If you set up a small class of max 4 business guys and get them to pay 25,000 an hour, I dont see why it wouldnt work. Ofcourse they have an option of a 1:1 and they will have to pay 40 or 50,000 an hour. Get one guy to bring his buddies along and study together. Yeah, they will know Im taking 100,000 an hour but its still way cheaper for each of them to come and learn together. And more fun since they are learning with friends.
Whwn I said 50,000 an hour I meant for 1:1 strictly. Discounts come with more people.
1:1 - 50,000 so thats 50,000/hour for me
2 students - 40 each 80,000/hour
3 students - 30 each 90,000/hour
4 students - 25 each 100,000/hour |

5 million is a lot of work. But between 3 and 4 isnt really much. All you need is a few hours extra a week and you are set.
I launder my money on books, going out to eat good food, camera stuff, magazines etc. i.e entertainment. I save my entire paycheck and we use my wife's earnings for boring stuff like groceries, bills, etc. |
