To be honest, I never even gave Canada a second thought till I came to Korea!
Why such hostility?
BTW I'm from SoCal, if that means anything.

There are no more Canadian Anti-Americans than there are from any other country. |

It's not really that small. Also, I am thinking along the lines of percentage of population.
I myself, don't think most Canadians are anti-American. It's more the kind of relationship where two close friends like to argue and have fights sometimes.
If you read Dave's ESL, it also gives the feeling that most Americans are anti-Canadian. I know that isn't true, but if you read this website, there are a lot of anti-Canadian comments (a lot are even from Canadians). |

Why? It's the beer. Face it, if you came from the worlds greatest beer producing country and your southern neighbor drank piss water, how do you think you'd feel when you stopped in a tavern on the medditerranean ocean and someone mistook you for a piss drinker? Honestly. |

The Canadians that complain about America basically fall under 2 categories
1) They're stupid. I've been abroad long enough to know and appreciate the kindness of Americans. I am very thankful that America is situated next to us and much prefer to have America than most of the other G7 countries. America is a blessed nation and so is Canada. To Americans, all I have to say is to please not to take comments written by idiotic people seriously. They're Canada's shame.
2) These are the teasers. I know that there are some Canadians that like to tease Americans with nasty comments. Americans are a tempting target because they are so patriotic. It's easy to get a rise out of many Americans and often there's a silly Canadian that can't resist the temptation of pushing your buttons. I guess you could throw these people into category #1 because they're too stupid to see the damage they're doing to our relationship.
On behalf of all these know-nothing ignorant Canadians, I apologize. They do not represent the majority of us. |

Today alone, I've posted a lot of negative comments towards an a$shole who happens to be American. He started slandering Canadians for no reason, I was having a bad day at work and decided to fight fire with fire (posted Anti-American comments to combat the Anti-Canadian ones). However, afterwards I felt guilty and removed the post because I actually love Americans and enjoy their culture. I said some stuff that was Anti-American but meant to be directed towards one person, not the entire group, so that's why I removed the posts on the other topic.
There seems to be a lot more Canadian bashing than American bashing. On Dave's ESL, it is fine for someone to say, "Oh, you must be Canadian ." Just look at the posts made today, and you'll find that a lot are Canadian bashing, and the American bashing is done in self defence. Also, often in this forum Canadians are an easy target and are often negatively targeted.
I think that this post should be changed to why are their so many people that hate Canadians? |

Fair enough. Every mass produced US beer is crap. But since the late 80's micro brews abound, and they truly are great!
Canadian mass produced beers in the year 2006 are nothing like the beer made 10 years ago.

Richard is pretty much right. Most Americans don't/historically haven't given Canada much thought. About all most of us know is that is where our winter storms and blizzards come from. It's the country that Santa Claus visits before he gets to us. The #1 Canadian complaint is that Americans don't know anything about them....what the capital is, who the prime minister is, the names of the provinces....
That being true, the first anti-Americanism most of us experience is from Canadians here in Korea. We lash back and then we get this:
There seems to be a lot more Canadian bashing than American bashing.
Balderdash and poppycock. Do an objective scan of the thread titles. I dare you. One comment, often from a troll, and ALL Americans are bashing us again.
An awful lot of Canadians want to have it both ways: Americans ignore us and are ignorant of us, but bash us anyway because they clearly spend all of their time thinking about us. It just doesn't compute.
Rightly or wrongly, justified or not, you are flying under our radar until you generate a blizzard. SOME of your countrymen and women land in Seoul and zero in on the first Yank they see, venom dripping from their fangs, and start in on the drill...the Tories of '76, the War of 1812....yada, yada, yada...The same conversation you had on the barstool back in Edmonton where everyone nods and says, "Yeah, yeah, those damn Yanks" and expect us to smile and apologize...or something. God knows what those guys expect. Whatever it is, it seems we are expected to admit guilt and responsibility for whatever happened in the past. Most of us, in our beery fog are thinking, "WTF was that all about?"
And then one comes on Dave's and retaliates, and 6 Canadians get on their high horse go, "See? They're bashing us again." Look at the threads. Do a search. This C vs US topic comes up about every two months. A good portion of them are Canadians complaining--dare I say whining--that the Yanks are bashing us again.
Canada is a nice country. Good things to see. Nice people to meet. Interesting things to do.
But a good number of the people have a serious inferiority complex. It ain't our fault. Their behavior is damaging the relationship between our countries. Years ago, I coined a term for these people: notAmericans. It is not possible for this portion of Canadians to be proud of their country. They only see themselves defined by what they are not. Us. It's sad, it's frustrating for us and it's unhealthy for them.
It's very much the same thing that is annoying about the Koreans vis a vis the Japanese. Inferiority complex. Over-emphasis on any and all accomplishments by anyone who has the most tenuous connection to the country and a hypersensitivity to any comment that is short of an out-right glowing drop down to your knees and grovel in admiration.
I'm not a bigot and I'm not anti-anybody, but I do get impatient with the temper tantrums I see from some people here. Some of you need to find a way to be proud of your home without comparing it to the neighbors. It is not an attractive quality. |

It may come down to this issue, the majority of American citizens agreeing with your statement.

While a large number of American international policies affecting Canada, Canadian citizens who support traditional home lands or just the impact that US international policies may have on Canada and people who live in Canada, while the democratic majority of the US will still say

Personally, I prefer to be with America than China in the future. All friends have spats, it's only normal. But one person did have it right, there is a lot of anti-Canadian bashing on this site, just as in the opposite too. The difference is the anti-Canadian stuff is usually just ignored (the little bits) and the big ones get some comments (with some Canadians throwing in their bashing of Canada too). There are a lot of Canadians who need to grow up (well, atleast the posters on this site, most Canadians are not like that). But please don't think there aren't plenty of Americans on this site that need to do the exact same thing. |
