| I'm heading there for the May long weekend and I have never been to Japan before. Some do and don'ts would be nice as well as places that are must sees. Thanks for you help. |

| see a couple of palaces; don't over do it. if the cherry blossoms are in bloom, you are in for a real treat. check out this mountain in kyoto that has wild monkeys ... very cool and great views/ photo ops of the city below. can't remember the name, but just ask ... monkey mountain. get sushi!!! omg!!! also, skip the tourist stuff and just wander around, check out a cafe or izakaya joint, get coffee, walk through the markets and parks. very european for a japanese city. enjoy! |

Ninna-Ji Palace
Several of the temples in the North-west part of the city, including Ryoanji Temple, famous for its meditative rock garden.
The canal district of Gion for what nightlife Kyoto has to offer (not much). At dusk, you may be lucky enough to see geisha silently gliding along to an appointment |

I hope you have booked a place because during that weekend is golden week...the busiest holiday travelling time in Japan...

| Yes, definitely go to Gion, it is really interesting and pretty around there. I saw a Geisha in the street there but she scared me a bit as she reminded me of a clown and I hate clowns! There are a lot of Pavillions and temples in Kyoto that are definitely worth a look and the bus system is excellent in getting you there. Oh, and enjoy the public bath if you stay in a ryokan, very relaxing after a days sightseeing. |

| Toji Temple is great. I once stayed at the Toji Ann Guest House~ rent a bicycle for the day, not bad. Nanzen ji is great as well. Many nice palaces. |

I wouldn't mind seeing Kyoto. I read this book once, I believe it was called "Four Seasons in Kyoto" by someone I cannot remember. Of course that was when the guy was there around 20 years ago. Ah, his name was "Pico" something. "Ayer"? Anyway it was interesting and the place sounded cool.
What country could be more unique than Japan? |
